Two days into my DE pursuit

Hi,

Thought I'd give you guys an update after my first two shaves with a DE.

Was on holiday on Monday and as it was SWMBO's birthday I decided to have a shave and it turns out to have possibly been the last time a Mach 3 will touch my smooth and manly jawline.

Got back from the shops with a lighter wallet than usual and lo-and-behold I found a package in my letterbox - my first DE, a Lord L7.

So after carefully unwrapping it, dropping it and checking it for any misalignments due to my clumsy, fat fingers, I carried it gently upstairs to the bathroom and placed it in the centre of my quickly growing shaving shrine.
For the past few months I've been using a shaving brush and Wilkinson Sword soap to accompany my Mach 3 but since deciding to go serious I've bought the following:

Steptic(?) crayon
Alum Block
Aqua something or other Belgian shaving soap stick
Williams Shaving cream (for shaving brushes)
Another cheap shaving brush
Williams Aqua Velva aftershave
Gillette Cool Wave aftershave
Nivea Sensitive Skin balme

Well when it was time for bed I decided to give it a go and have my first real shave.

Obviously the prep went out the window so I wasn't expecting much but to my surprise it wasn't a bad experience at all.
I was imagining a scene from a horror movie and could already hear the hysterical screaming of the missus when she saw me emerging from the bathroom looking like the invisible man with a roll of Andrex covering my face, but NO!
I managed to cut myself just three times, one was a stupid case of forgetting where my beard began and shaving what was until then an unknown mole - wheeper number 1.
The second cut was an even more stupid one - not happy with having shaved OVER the two moles on my jawline without cutting either of them, I had to try and cut across the grain and knick one of them. Well, you live and learn - wheeper number 2.
And I don't know how I managed to get wheeper number 3 but it didn't bleed for long.
So first shave done and it was time for the alum sting.
I was expecting worse to be honest, it did sting a little but the most unpleasant thing is the lemony tartness of it if you end up licking your lips just afterwards.
Finally the aftershave - boy did it work and I loved the smell so I put some more on the next morning.

I shaved again yesterday, this time I didn't make the mistake of cutting outside the beardline but I did make the mistake of imagining that my body heals faster than anyone else on this earth and thinking that I could shave the mole on my jawline without opening up the previous nights wound..... silly me!

So Day 2 brought me a little blood but more importantly I did a second pass and my shave was a lot better than the first time.

All in all I'm chuffed. My Lord L7 isn't a glamorous beast and is considered as mild to those grizzly faced DE experts and I probably forget it as soon as my two Superspeeds arrive, but it's already left me with a couple of great memories and so will always have a place in my heart.

One thing I will try and avoid in the future - shaving so slowly that the foam dries on my face, no longer providing cushion or slip, and falls onto the bathroom floor like artificial snow!

TBC

Cheers,

Paul

That's a very good start and you have acquired your supplies well.

How did the Williams cream perform? Did you get the menthol variety? You live in Belgium so its a Europe only cream I guess.

Hi,

Don't think it was menthol, if I remember (I'll check later), I think it's for sensitive skins.
Personally I prefer the soap stick from Aquagena (new I'd remember it later). Smells nice and hospitally and froths up nicely. Only problem is that you have to hold the stick itself as the tube doesn't have a deodorant style pusher-upper (probably has a lovely technical name) so not the best design.

Hoped that the Superspeeds would arrive today but SWMBO hasn't mentioned them so probably still stuck in the post somewhere between Texas and Belgium (cheers Techichi)!
