I travel often for business. Being new to DE shaving what are suggestions. I was thinking of a stick, travel brush from Muhle, and for TSA a Harry's cartridge razor.
That's fine for a carry-on only trip.
If you're going to check a bag, then expand a little.
Maybe a VDH DE razor with your favorite blade, and a small container of your favorite soap or cream.
For my carry on TSA kit I picked up a Trac II handle for cheap, and a 100 pack of Personna carts I’ve still got a fair number of left. I’m not sure they’re still making them though. Various Gillette options seem to still be available.
I generally just go with a tallow Speick stick (still stocked up) in a vintage tin, and maybe a Twist up tube with a soap of my choice for variety on a longer trip. It doesn’t fit my dopp, so just goes in the bag.
I use an Omega 40033 or a 599, because I don’t like synths, but there’s any variety of travel brushes. And you can use a stick and hand lather without a brush just fine with practice. I live/travel in hot/humid. So long as your brush can breath, I’ve never had an issue traveling with a natural. Breathable container and dopp has always worked for me.
I like to travel light, so I use travel sized tools that are ergonomicly comfortable. And it all fits in a 1qt Tom Bihn clear packing cube as a 3-1-1 Dopp kit. I take a 3oz bottle of Dr Bronner’s Castile soap for body/shampoo soap, and use hotel soaps when available. I’ve done a month out of it without a restock, so don’t be afraid to think outside the box if you’re doing carry-on only travel.
If you are carrying on, maybe a La Toja or Speick shaving stick, inexpensive and light Omega boar (such as the 10066 or 10029) and a Gillette Guard razor. The Guard is lightweight, with pivoting head and replaceable cartridges. It is a single blade cartridge designed not to clog.
You can often buy the cases cheaply on Ebay and then replace the contents with your preferred items. When flying with only carry on luggage I take a Bic Metal disposable or a Gillette Trac 2 cartridge razor instead.
- Synthetic brush (dries quick)
- Shave stick of choice or make your own (no bowl needed)
- Gillette Guard and a couple extra cartridges
- RR aftershave wax (under airline liquid amounts)
First, Welcome to B&B, Sir PinehillJoe!
It's great that you're busy with business travel!
I'd strongly support your Carry-On travel!!
Here are my most recent travel kits.
Yes, cartridges!
And I transfer soaps and lotions to small travel containers!
Plus, use a couple wonderful mini brushes!
Enjoy your travels and shaves!!
I was just thinking about this, it’s that time of year.
When I travel by myself for work (usually international) it’s just Harry’s cartridges and a good brush, soap and post-shave balm. It’s not worth checking a bag for a DE shave going through Nairobi.
When I traveled internationally with the family last month we were already checking a ton of bags so DE made sense. Still, the chances of something getting confiscated/lost were pretty high so I packed things I could lose without a lot of pain: Merkur 34C, a good AP Shave Co. synthetic brush, and some Noble Otter Orbit (great for hot weather).
We’re about to get on a plane next week for Dallas and this is my kit. I’m not as worried about losing everything, and it would hurt if I did but it can also be replaced without a crazy waitlist:
Bag: Tom Binh small toiletry bag
OneBlade leather razor sheath
Pre-shave: glycerin soap
Soap: Noble Otter Hamami (good Winter everyday soap)
Brush: Tatara adjustable synthetic
Razor: SS Tatara Muramasa
Post-shave: Nancy Boy balm
The Muramasa (or any adjustable) should be good for whatever comes up (shaving every day, skip a few days, etc.). I also bought a Leaf disposable blade bank on Amazon.
My Carry on kit includes a disposable Trac II (a decoy) a travel can of Barbasol sensitive (orange cap). A PAA Filament, and a DE blade which I store in a mini Altoids tin. Never fails TSA ever
