Train Journeys

When Union Pacific gets the Big Boy (4014) out of the steam shop, I hope they put her into passenger service from Omaha to Calif. I would love to take that trip. The Big Boy is the largest steam locomotive ever built (4-8-8-4) wheel configuration. UP also has the second largest, The Challenger (4-6-6-4)

Awesome...I didn't know the Big Boy (4014), was 'in the shop' and it would be great if UP puts it's back into service. :thumbsup:

"Of the 25 Big Boy locomotives manufactured, eight remain. Seven of the eight surviving Big Boys are on static display. One, number 4014, is undergoing a restoration for excursion service which includes conversion to No. 5 oil firing. Five are displayed outdoors without protection from the elements; 4005 and 4017 are displayed indoors. The remaining Big Boy locomotives are located throughout the United States".

Big Boy 4023 is on static display along with UP 6900 Centennial DDA40X at Omahas Kenefick Park, in South Omaha. The DDA40X was the most powerful single unit Diesel ever built.
My Great Uncle was the head buyer for Union Pacific and a cousin worked in the maintenance shops. He moved with them when UP took the shops to Little Rock.

I'd go from London down the Channel coast to Plymouth, taking in the scenic Victorian line along the sea coast ...

I'd love to take the train cross country in North America, but as has been pointed out there aren't a whole lot of options. I have friends close to the tracks on the other side of the state. Two trains a day, that have stops and therefore take longer than the car. And the fare is 5x the price of the gas.

While we all know that the Euros and the Japanese have those great train services, we tend to forget that the distances are askew, gasoline is cheaper here, our politicians and entitled elites don't travel by train, etc. Maybe one of the private railways can give Amtrak a run for it's money? I don't think Amtrak ran them out of business like USPS did with DHL ...

But, I'm still going to try and take one trip .. not likely the Trans-Siberia or Orient Express, but maybe the Trans Canadian route or City of New Orleans or something.

Dunno.

I don't know how they classify train routes in the UK, but it's a small, compact country so I doubt they have "long distance" thinks like the Trans-Siberian and Rocky Mountaineer.
Doc:
I "dunno" either...but searching, I think there's only one (1) long distance train in the UK (I might think that's too many 'stops' for me).

This discussion about trains in the UK reminds me that another one I'd love to try is an excursion on the Flying Scotsman -- preferably one that involves a few stops at single malt distilleries!

That trip would be worth my 'eye-tooth' in gold...but the trip for you would be the 'The Highland Journey' to;

"Enjoy an evening visit to Strathisla Distillery, one of the oldest working distilleries and home to one of Scotland's most
famous whiskies".

East Lansing to Chicago. It was kind of lame. Only other train I've been on has been at zoos. Maybe a cross country in a luxurious train would be better. Transsiberian was a pretty good movie though.
