The PILS aesthetic - love it or...?

I think it is a bit of an optical illusion. At first the top ring looks a little longer but if you look closer, without looking at the head as well, you can see they're the same length and the ruler confirms that.

There's a similar effect when you frame a photograph in a picture matte (I'm a photographer, so bear with the analogy).

When you cut a picture matte with the same distance on the top as on the bottom, it just looks wrong. It ends up looking like the picture is sitting too low in the matte, though both distances are the same. The remedy for this is to "weigh" the matte - to cut the opening so that the height of the matte below the photo measures taller than the portion above. This gives some visual weight, a base so to speak, to the matte, giving it a more correct, balanced look.

I think the same thing is happening here. I may be more sensitive to these things since I'm trained to look for stuff like that. I do hope PILS takes this into consideration and changes it because the razor is starting to grow on me. I doubt I would get one unless they addressed that point, though.

That's correct, it is an optical illusion. That's why framers "weigh" their mattes.

The illusion is that the top portion will look too big when the top and bottom measure the same (both the matte's and razor's top portion look bigger when they are, in fact, the same length), so to restore visual balance, additional length needs to be added to the bottom.

It doesn't help visually that there's also the head on top of all that.

I bashed the Feather because it seemed to be $160 for a Tech-clone. But I always loved the aesthetics of it. The Pils.....like I said, it must be the non-traditional design, but I just don't think it's purty.:tongue_sm
They are both examples of the best manufacturing quality and design talent that this Earth can produce at this time..they are more than razors..they are works of usable art!!!! We may never own a Bentley or Aston Martin but we can own these razors and feel what true quality is....NICE !!!!!!!!!!

I actually like the cool minimalist design but I just checked the price, and... before my AD gets out of control.... how does it shave?

While I discontinued the line do to conflicts of interest I have to say the PILs razor is awesome. I am a total Gillette fan but these razors get the nod from me. I really enjoy mine. Perhaps I'll bring them back in at some point.

Glad to see you are well Ray. Can you tell us about this conflict of interest or is it a matter you wish to remain private?

Thank you sir. At this time the conflict will remain under wraps but know one thing, it was not directly related to PILs or their products.

I must admit, I wasn't enthused about the PIL razor at first but it's definitely growing on me. Now that I see the hexagonal design and I'm liking it better...much better. Damn you guys, I already have enough razors!

EDIT: Double damn! I'm loving that black razor and now I'm thinking about when I'll get it.

Make sure you are aware that the black one is some kind of acrylic "glass" on the handle. If that is what you like then how about that. Remember the discount code from the other thread started by royalshave. :biggrin1:

I like all the Pils, but my preference bias is toward the gold plated one. That is one sharp looking piece of equipment.

If it is resolved let us know, I may want to pick up one with a polished head at some point.

Glad to see you are back!

Very true. I will point out that due to size, the weighting is less of an issue here. I can spot a photo that has been center-matted in a second, the Pils took a few glances before it became visible. I don't consider it an issue worth giving any thought to.

I just can't wait for the day PILS decides to release an open-comb model...hopefully by then I'll have paid off the one I have :)

The black one has an acrylic insert around the middle (if that makes sense) So it's smooth all the way down instead of having a collar and bottom piece that protrude a bit like you see on all the other ones. The 104NE is lighter though, strange. Something around 85g, but then again the Feather weighs 87g, so not much off.

The Feather actually weighs 90g, according to the literature...and my scale. :tongue_sm

You know... we have a BST thread where you can unload your Futur after awhile. Futur might make a great travel razor.

I also have the hex handle..very cool but the satin stainless is almost a primal thing..to hold the razor brings out the true men in us..we will plunder and pillage to get one and keep one. As I said somewhere else you don,t even need a blade in it. You carrry it in a holster ..with shave soap on a rope..perhaps a Feather stainless in the small of your back ..you walk down the street and kick *** !!!! If obama can do it ..we can do it!!

Two questions for you Pils owners.

First, how does it handle when you fingers are wet? The only complaint I have with the Progress is that it is slippery. I wonder with the sleek design whether this will be the case with the Pils.

Second, how aggressive is it? :a11:
