What's new

The music you listened to in the last century.

Norman Greenbaum? I thought he was a one-hit-wonder. Did he do more good stuff or were you just listening to Spirit In The Sky over and over again? I wouldn’t disagree if you were - it’s one of the greatest.

Well, there's Spirit in the Sky and then there's a somewhat rare extended cut of it with a lot more of the acid guitar. Ol' Norman had a little band and they did a lot of interesting, kinda folky stuff that he flogged on his website years ago. I sent him a note thanking him for his work, and he actually replied.

I have to laugh that occasionally in my mind the intro to Spirit morphs into ZZ Top's Lagrange. I can get through some of Spirit on the jaw harp -- I have a Glazyrin "Compass" that's really good on the distorted guitar sound. It amuses me.

With few exceptions, all of the music I listen to on LPs/CDs/downloads/YT is last century: Billie Holiday; Glenn Miller; Brubeck Quartet (50s/60s); R&R oldies (50s/early 60s), Dylan (60s/70s), 70s punk, and 90s Celtic punk. Same with films. I don't belong in this current century.
I'm with you in all but the punk. And like you, I don't belong in this current century either.

Born in 1973. I had good exposure to various rock and roll and pop music before those things either disappeared or turned insipid.

But this is still the music I mainly listen to when I want to listen to music. It's just that I don't listen to music as much as I did in the 70s, 80s, or 90s. I'm more interested in listening to people talk about things. Ideas. Or audiobooks.

There might be new music that is pretty good, but the mantra seems to be "You have to look for it."

I never had to go on safari before. I just had to turn on the radio. There it was. I remember standing outside a record store with a friend, in a line, to buy Guns and Roses "Use Your Illusion 1 and 2" at a special midnight release. It has been a long time since I heard anything that would compel me to wait outside at midnight to buy the release.

Occasionally, I'm exposed to some new Top 40 music at a restaurant or while buying gas or whatever. And I think, "Wow, 10 minutes from now I won't be able to remember or describe anything about this music." Compare and contrast...my sister was THIS close to being named "Layla". Talk about an influential, memorable song!
