The Last Razors On My Wish List

Interesting. I do not comprehend collections. Collections are for museums. Stuff on a shelf? What is the point? I would not want to own a razor (or anything else) that was too rare or nice to use or did not suit me.

There are certainly some impressive collections around here! They are like mini shaving museums!

Fumbling about.
Be on the look out for those that you mentioned that you might like to try. At the last Gun Show I went to a guy had four DE razors on the table with other items. I looked and one was a first year Fatboy, one was a fist year and quarter flair tip, one fist year !09 Adjustable or Black Beauty and lastly a Gem 1912. I picked them up and asked the gentleman what the price would be for them all. He responded $3.00. I gave him $5.00 and said keep the change.

What an inspiring story!

I read through this entire thread. If had similar thoughts about where to go. Getting into this a bit late, this year, I've had to pay more than $20 for some of the razors I wanted. How much you pay is determined by how long you want to search and how much or important owning the razor happens to be.

A few months back I said I was through. A member said I didn't own any non Gillette razors. I agreed and started hunting for other brands and have landed a few that have become some of my favorite tools.

I've toyed with getting a GEM Jr. 1912.

Also on luck.

Also on whether you're willing to carefully evaluate the potential in a razor which looks terrible.

Also on having some knowledge of the razor you're looking for. This takes experience and time.

This was the best of the vendor's photos. In some pictures I thought the handle was broken into three pieces. I bought this razor in an auction where I was the only bidder. I was really buying only the head. The straight teeth were all I cared about.

It cleaned up easily with Dawn and a tooth brush.

The old silver was mostly intact.

The razor seemed unusually undamaged and intact.

It didn't even take much work. My bid on this razor was $12.

So, I've been looking over my "collection". I put that word in parentheses because all of my razors are really user quality. I've shaved with each and every one of them, except for the #!64 Goodwill I acquired last week, which will have it's trial run tomorrow morning. Anyway, I now have 29 razors, mostly vintage but some modern ones as well. Listed as follows:

Gillette Old Type Single Ring (3)
Gillette Old Type Ball End USA
Gillette Old Type Ball End Canada
Gillette Old Type Ball End England
Gillette Old Type head on Ikon Bulldog handle
Gillette Old Type head on Tech Fat handle
Gillette Goodwill #164
Gillette New Improved - Gold color (2)
Gillette New Improved Tuckaway - Gold (2)
Gillette New Improved Tuckaway - Chrome
Gillette NEW Short Comb with common bar handle
Gillette NEW Long Comb with common bar handle
Gillette Tech Ball End handle - Chrome
Gillette Tech Ball End handle - Gold
Gillette Tech Fat handle - Nickel
Gillette Tech Fat handle - Black
Gillette Super Speed
Gillette Slim Adjustable H3 (2)
Edwin Jagger DE89 Knurled handle
Merkur 34C HD
Muhle R41 head on Razorock Barber Pole handle
Schone Open Comb (both old and new handles but one head - broke the other one)
Razorock Old Type
Razorock Mission head (DE89 clone) on Edwin Jagger Chrome handle (travel razor)

So, this leaves me thinking what else I want to "complete" my collection. This is my short list of those I would like to acquire as time and money allows:

Gillette Old Type Bulldog handle (my holy grail razor)
Gillette Black Beauty Adjustable
Gillette Fat Boy Adjustable

I know, I don't have an Aristocrat or Flare Tip on the list or others of that ilk. I'm not a big TTO fan in general, even though I have two Slims because that is my birth quarter/year. And the Artisocrats are just plain expensive. I'm saving my money in case I find an Old Type Bulldog. The Black Beauty is on the list because as I've seen some listings of it I just like the look of it with the black handle. And I've heard so much about Fat Boys that I figure I should have one, although I could possibly drop it from the list. The point is, I think this is it for me. If I get these last few razors, I might actually consider my RAD cured. I have no desire to buy expensive modern razors like the ATTs, etc. I'm sure someone will be able to suggest another razor that I haven't thought of that might end up on the list. But maybe not.

And of the above vintage razors, 5 of them are "cased", which I don't use. I've thought about selling them but I've set that idea aside for the time being.

So what is my point? What am I missing on my "want" list? I reserve the right to decline any suggestion.

The Bulldog was My must have razor, I have had 2 in the past 2 years.
The one that I have now is going to stay.
I shave with all my razors ,most are Vintage Gillettes and do not feel the need to have a razor
that I won't use .

I know you said you were not interested Parker’s and I am pretty much in same boat as I have tried a couple of their TTOs which I didn’t particularly care for personally. However the Variant is a nice modern adjustable indeed.

I also would like to get the Rex but can’t come to grips with the price.

I also have had the rare experience of finding something that turned out to be significant. I think finding the John Watts/Sheffield Gleaner was the most significant simply because of the rarity. When I won it I had no idea other than I loved the look and hoped it would provide a good shave.
