Wait, isn't the Chubby 2 the brush that Vulfix made a bit larger, so everybody's complaining about the massive size jump from CH1 to CH2?

They messed around with the brush Alexander Simpson used? :thumbdown

The brush he designed and we all use/used! The Chubby 2 was as much a favourite of his as the Wee Scots (I say Scots as we used to make 2 sizes), it was also nearly made with his signature on.

There were two sizes of Wee Scots Gary? That's quite interesting to know! I had a question that you might, might not be able to answer.

Have you ever seen North By Northwest? You'll see a tiny brush at the 58 minute 08 second mark only lasts a few minutes where you can catch a glimpse of it, but it looks like a Wee Scot. Just smaller than what is currently made, and since mentioning there used to be two sizes it might be. Always thought it'd be cool to know. I would post a picture but none are available.

Yes we made two sizes of Wee Scot - the now 'discontinued' model was smaller than the current brush available, so it may well have been caught on film! Plenty of 50s and 60s films that have Simpson brushes on bathroom shelves! It used to be a game of the family to try and spot one of our 'babies' on screen!

Here's a link to a short clip from the movie. The picture quality could be better. Wait for the movie to load and then go to 3:12 and you'll see it.

Here's another link on the forum here of drP's tiny Wee Scot.

The original post, defining 'best'.

The best brush ever made...
Allowing for design, loft, elegance, style, purpose, collectability, and fitness.

Your humble opinions please.

Three years ago, DrP posted a new thread about an exceptionally beautiful brush that he had, and had re-knotted by Bearnd at Shavemac. This is a large handle brush with sweeping curves defining the shape; from Trumpers with elegant form and impeccable finish. Spectacular.

DrP's Curvaceous Beauty...

A couple of guys dubbed this the 'Jessica Rabbit' Brush because of the feminine-like curves, and it was subsequently illustrated by Antique Hoosier Mike.

Antique Hoosier's 'Jessica Rabbit' label

I think the days of innovative brush designs are past. I do highly regard the Bk x series of Kent brushes, though.

It is a lovely brush. I've got a Hoffritz rebadged Chubby 2 in Best. Fully butterscotched, so I'd guess it dates to the 50's or 60's. The hair has the same yellow/tan hue I see on my pre-Elizabeth II Kent. I love that hair. So soft. I also had a more recent Pre-Vulfix Super Chubby 2 (Rebadged as a Geo F Trumpers Chubby 3, but specs fit the Chubby 2 (~28mm knot/50mm loft) ) that was just a bit too big and soft for me. I replaced it with a modern Chubby 1 in Best and it fits in much better.

Gary

Great to have you on here.

I have recently ordered a Chubby 2 in Best and I am looking forward to its arrival even more having read your recommendation.

Why do you prefer it in Best over the other grades of hair?

Cheers
Paul

I like Simpsons Best more than their Super myself. The Super is very soft. Too much of a good thing. I face lather and I like having the extra scrub a DENSE (it makes VERY little difference in the less dense brushes for me) Best has over an equally dense Super when I'm lathering. And when I'm painting the latter passes, I couldn't tell the hair apart anyway (the scrub of the best is only noticeable when I splay the brush against my face). That's not saying I dislike the Super. I have some very soft brushes too. But for a daily brush, I like me some scrub.

Gary, specifically, why? (if you don't mind). I have my guesses but i'd love to hear from you on it.

The Best has a bit of scrub to it which I enjoy because it aids the bristle lifitng. Super was always a bit too 'gentle' for my liking (and the rest of the clan but you have to service your customer's wishes!). I used a Super knot for about 3 months but quite happily turned back to Best and have never used anything else since (when I was 20yrs old!)

Exactly what I expected to hear. Thanks for confirming, Gary!
