What's new

Tell me about Alabama.....

Now you boys behave. You know how your Mother and I hate it when you fight.

Oh you're on my list now: I'm moving to the Metroplex this summer and I want to ask the same basic question as texasPI did! But I also don't want to hijack this thread, so I'll start another one in a week or so.

Now you boys behave. You know how your Mother and I hate it when you fight.

Go to the UT El Paso website, check out some of that crazy, sweet, awesome Bhutanese architecture and give the new guy some love. It ain't Death Valley, but the Sun Bowl is pretty damn cool.

Funny you mention Bhutanese architecture. I am watching a documentary right now and Michael J Fox went to Bhutan, and they were describing GDH (Gross Domestic Happiness). I want to there. :001_smile

Yeah, where's the love? :001_smile UTEP all the way! Go Miners! Anyway, all those places/cities you mentioned, I cover all those. Going to be up in Santa Fe tomorrow. Btw, the torta place on Viscount is still around. Pretty good eats. Pepe's too. Heck everything is still around! The other guys I work with are all on Central time. People forget out here we're MST or is it MDT?

Now I don't know if anyone outside of Texas knows how to do BBQ but I'll try Alabama's I guess....:001_rolle

It ain't gonna be good, greasy, sleazy cabeza, brother.

I forgot Pepe's Chicken at McRae and Montana. And the stone greatness of the chile-relleno burrito at Pancho Villa way out by America's.

I took my aunt to a restaurant that was supposed to have "world famous" barbecue in Ohio. When the waiter, who knew we were Texans, asked how the barbecue was with a smile, my aunt replied, "I could give you a recipe, if you'd like":lol:

Love it!

Yeah, Pepe's is a regular dinner spot. Not that one but the one over on the west side. Had a chile relleno and chile verde burrito for dinner tonight. My mom said she'd Fedex me tortillas and refried beans on dry ice!

Yes: all of their franchise locations. There's only one Dreamland, and it's in Tuscaloosa. But Archibalds (Northport) is actually better barbecue, and Dreamland is amazingly good barbecue.

But I was referring to Aubs...

Quoted for Truth. Every bit of it. I work at UA, as an administrator AND an instructor in the Honors Program, and agree with all you've said Soapbox.

This is why I owe you a cold beer next time you're in town.

Devastating. Funny. Fantastic!

But you should have known better -- two Texans getting snookered like that in Ohio...

Aw, shucks. :blushing: Thanks. I'll be sure and take you up on it.

One barbecue side note: my mother says the Bear got his barbecue from Archibald's, not Dreamland.

Well, to revive my own thread....

Wife and I just got back yesterday from our house hunting trip to Montgomery. We're squared on that front just need to pack and get there.

All in all my first impression of Alabama was favorable save for the humidity! Flew into Birmingham and drove down to Montgomery. I look forward to moving there and exploring all the history.

On a side note, what's up with the 10% sales tax? Sheesh! And the state income tax? I guess I was spoiled in Texas by comparison...:001_rolle

Rainbow Tortas (Viscount and Acer) rocked. And Pepe's Tamales on McRae. And the original stucco Dali's on Mesa, not the creepy new one.

It is nothing like the Hill Country, dude, so prepare. Closer to North/Northeast Texas, particularly the Red River Valley east of Texoma.

If your kid was born in ELP it will be a whole new world of rivers and creeks and state parks and seasons.

Also, things will be a LOT closer than they are in ELP. Other towns, significant cities, etc. are much closer than in the Trans-Pecos. (For those who don't know, El Paso is famous for being 300 freaking miles from everything. Literally.)

Do you know how wierd it is to wake up, and read a post about El Paso in such detail on the internet?!!?!?!

I was born in dallas... and its still wierd to even come across Topics on that on the usual forums I've been on over the many, many moons.

The new dali's is really lame. I stopped going religiously once it moved that 100 feet across the parking lot.

Hey, if you guys have not tried it yet... check out Bonnie's Cafe on Mesa in the miner village area. Huge, tasty burritos and hamburgers... awesome mexican plates... set in a 50's style diner.

Or for even better burrito's the size of your Forearm and Hand combined... Rafas! There are many locations but I've only been to the one on Montana and Cotton. Bonnies might be a tiny bit bigger, but Rafas raises the taste bar by a hair.

Since I'm using a burrito theme today... (I must be hungry for a burrito! Hahaha)

"La Poblanita" on Airway... fresh burrito's made right infront of you... beans with rajas con queso & chile... nirvana.

Super Burro on Dyer is really good too from what I've heard. Maybe even better than the others... but I havn't tried it out yet. Its way to far from my side of town to check out when I have Bonnies right here close by. Well... close enough to want one. Theres a Bonnies on the east side from what I've heard too. Just don't know where.

Sometimes I miss Dallas... It was Green there. :w00t:

I'm bringing my old thread back from the dead...again!

So, we've lived here (Montgomery) for about 8 months now and I miss Texas terribly! It's not that I don't like Alabama...but it's not Texas! :tongue_sm

I've gotten used to being asked, "so y'all from around here?" LOL! Surprisingly, the only reall difficulty I encountered was finding a barber. That and the sticker shock of a haircut. I was spoiled by the $5 haircuts my son and I were used to getting. Here, it sets me back $14/head.

Good to hear you're adjusting. This is the first time I've seen this thread, so I thought I'd comment.

We just got back from Huntsville/Madison a few weeks ago. We go there every few years for a couple of days to visit some of my wife's family that relocated down there. I have to say Soapbox's first post really hit the nail on the head for me.

When we were driving into Huntsville we literally passed, in a row, baptist church, baptist church, trailer home dealer, and a large billboard for gun sales. I had to crack "I know we're in Alabama now!" and my wife just glared at me. We were there after the passage of the healthcare reform and while I'm all for less government control in areas it was funny to hear them complain about it in a county where it's illegal to sell alcohol.

That said, it really is a pleasant place. Everyone is always saying hello to you and greeting you. We went out for a walk one morning and everyone said hello to us. We don't even get this at home in Missouri in our own subdivision. The home prices are a steal compared to where I live and they have some great locations to visit. I'm just not sure I'd be able to get a job there as I have job in the software business and I didn't see a lot of that there.
