Great thread!
My 13 year old just had his second DE shave. Everyone, including grandparents with poor vision were talking about his rat-stach..
Anyway, I had him use a Blue Tip Flair, my mildest fixed razor, with a Derby (yeah, I know, not too sharp, but, on purpose). I had him use COB, but, as several have said, Focused on Prep, Mid-shave and Post Shave. He made several passes WTG only....I wouldn't let him use any other strokes yet. WTG took care of his fairly soft whiskers, And, NO nicks or even weepers, and he has some acne.
So, Slow and Easy was the best advice that I ever got, and that's what I gave him.
Btw, my 20 year old gets the most-perfect shaves with his M3, so, I let him be, except when it comes to pre and post shave. I got him taking better care of his skin pre and post.
I've read various places a post shave alum block rub is a very effective disinfectant and anti-acne treatment. If I were using an aftershave such as the Thayers medicated superhazel, I think I'd use that first, and while it was still damp, use that as the moisture to wet (and thus help dissolve) the alum.
Fantastic advice, guys. Thank you so much!
I will sit him down and go through the posts and let him decide on his kit of choice. I am looking forward to the experience - father/son bonding is great!
I really appreciate everyone's input. This is a great community to be a part of.
Happy shaving everyone.
I taught my son to wet shave about a year ago when he was 17. He had very bad acne. Got him a EJ DE89, brush, mama bears soap and some witch hazel. After shaving for about a month his acne pretty much cleared up. He loves to shave and has his own collection of aftershaves and soaps. Hs technique is great and he has even taught me a couple of things. The only one who wasn't thrilled about him using a razor initially was my wife. Now that his skin has cleared up she thinks it's great. He has one rule, no one can talk to him while he shaves.
I finally gave my son his first shaving lesson last night. A few things that came out of it that I'd like to share.
Plan on more than one session. There's a LOT to learn for someone who's never shaved and it can be overwhelming. Based on last night I suspect we'll need 2 or 3 more sessions before he's ready to go it alone.
Milder is not always better for a newbie. To find the right angle, I had him put the razor perpendicular to his skin and slowly tilt it down until he could feel the blade. I had his Slim set on 2 and he had a hard time feeling when the blade was touching his skin so finding that angle was difficult. I also caught him using too much pressure from time to time. Next time I'll have him turn it to 3 and see if that's enough exposure.
Test the products BEFORE he uses them. I bought a tube of Axe Denim SC for him, and I thought he'd prefer the modern scent. I shaved at the same time, using the same products, and I found that it burned my face, particularly since I was a longer time to shave than normal. He thinks it's burning him but he's not sure. I'll have him use something different next time.
