Suggestions on a rifle?

As a retired police officer, the only rifle I own, other than a very accurate single shot pellet rifle, is a Henry lever action .22. Its an excellent all around shooting rifle, for plinking, varmit's, etc. Its fun to shoot, accurate, and you can get a brick of .22 ammo for less than $20 bucks.

They also make them in other calibers too. Its an American made well crafted rifle, well worth taking a look at. I've always been a handgun shooter, but this Henry rifle is a lot of fun to shoot.

If you have settled on the .223 Rem cartridge, you may want to consider what type of varmint hunting that you will be doing. For example prarie dog/ground squirrel rifles tend to be in the 10 to 12 pound range with 26 inch bull barrels. They are ment to be fired from a bipod or bench and generally fired for extended shot strings. Then you have the walking varmint rifles, generally used for woodchucks, coyotes, rabbits, etc. They can be in .223 Rem or .243 Win and lighter weight for carrying extended distances. I would go with the Savage model 11 FHNS.
