What's new

shaving guide book from 1905.

Just to report, tried it with Tabac this morning. Cold lather felt... ummm... weird. So, the overall shave was not as comfortable as I used to, but not as bad as I expected. That said, now I know that if I ever need to shave with cold water, it is absolutely doable.
I am happy it wasn't your worst shaving experience! :001_cool: The more I do it, the more comfortable shaves have become. In your experience did you have a hard time with the ATG pass? Also, I am curious if you had any post irritation, especially on the following day.

I'd say the first pass, WTG, was a bit tougher than usual. No irritations observed.

What a great find! I really enjoyed reading it. To be honest, I wish that many books were written in such a colloquial, easy-to-read manner. I felt like I was listening to an enjoyable lecture from a visitor from 1905! What a way with language they seemed to have back then...

Thanks for the guide. I actually used it and it works really good for my curly bear type. The hot towel at the end helps out alot. When the witch hazel goes in it has a different feeling than that of a cold face. Irritation now even more minor is cut even more.

The hair gets soft from the saturation of water, etc.

By using cold water before shaving the skin tightens up and the hairs stand up straighter.

That's my theory anyway. When using an electric shaver I always used to wash my face with cold water before hand and I would get a much better shave with it than if I used warm water.

However, trying it with traditional shaving, I found it to not be worth the discomfort of cold water. Plus, as stated, I find it harder to clean the razor with cold water.

Ah-HA!

I have a similar theory. Also, like another poster, my lather tends to stay moist longer with cold water.

I think that the cold lather makes the hairs stand up. Each hair follicle has a mucle in it, and I believe the cold water works like getting the goosebumps, though to a lesser extent.

Also, the cool lather can help cool your face and close blood vessels.
Whatever effects happen, it is only a little bit of lather or water.

I'm going to read that for sure!

And uh... gold dollars come from a 220 grind? Boy am I glad Mr. Rupp honed it for me!

Happy shaves,
William
