Shaving “Creams” in the tubes

I’ve been super curious about the creams. Before my DE wet-shaving follies began, I discovered Cremo in the tube and it was game changing with Gilette cartridges. Super slick, just like the advertising states. But I’ve been curious if I have been applying it wrong. Should I be using the brush? Working it into a lather? Or just wipe it on with hot water and enjoy the slickness. Wondering if I’m missing something. And I’m assuming the same is true for Proraso and other cremes in tubes? Thanks!

For me shaving creams perform better when lathered with a brush as the resulting lather provides cushioning in addition to the slickness. That makes for less irritation later on.

I guess you can use the cream just mixed up with hot water, but it’ll be a waste imho since you will use much more product than necessary. There are brushless creams available, where a brush isn’t needed.

I’ve tried the Mühle shaving creams, Speick and have a tube of Vicco Tuneric & Sandalwood from India. With the exception of Vicco, which I haven’t tried yet, the Mühle and Speick creams are fantastic.

Welcome to B&B, the nicest place on the Interwebs.

With Cremo, I get my face wet and rub it onto the skin with fingers. It is not designed to lather. It needs another splash and more cream for subsequent passes. It also works well (better than anything else I have tried) as a pre cream, and it can be added to a soap lather for additional slickness.

Other creams in a tube typically do lather, so I put them in a bowl and whip them up with a brush. To face lather, squeeze a little into a wet brush and get whirling. These include Proraso, Art of Shaving, and many others.

First welcome to B&B. I see you joined us yesterday.

Depends on the shaving cream, some are meant for brush use and others not. Pay close attention to the instructions. Cremo is not meant to be lathered, rather it is just applied to a wet face. I believe that Proraso's shaving cream is best with a brush to build lather. I only have their soft shaving soap so others can comment on the best way to use this product.

I use shaving creams from two manufacturers, LEA in tubes and Cyril R. Salter in tubs. Both of these are meant for use with a brush to build lather similar to what one gets from a shaving soap. One can either apply an almond size amount of these creams to one's face to face lather (damp brush, add small amounts of water to the brush a few times) or place the cream in a bowl for bowl lathering.

My creams include LEA Professional (large 250 gram tube) and Mentolada (menthol also in a tube) and both of these are soft creams that I can easily spread on my face prior to lathering. Same for my Cyril R. Salter French Vetiver in a tub. I just scoop out what I need with a small spoon and apply it to my face. Surprisingly my Cyril R. Salter Wild Rose tub (same cream base ingredients) is much firmer so while I used to treat this like my other creams, I've recently changed to either loading it directly onto my brush or bowl lathering like my soft Italian soaps.

Should you branch out to other creams or even shaving soaps you should figure out what works best for each product. A link to a thread on this is pasted below.

Riffinrich, In addition to Cremo do or have you used any other shaving soaps and creams beyond the Prorasso Red tub you noted in another post?

Thank you Lane. I have The Old Taylor of Bond Street in Sandalwood and that’s pretty awesome and it seems to be well liked. I got the Proraso because it’s much cheaper and I thought I would try it. But I have 4 tubs of TOBS to use too. What can I say? I liked it. LOL

The creams in a tube I have are used with a brush and a brush is such a Zen Moment for myself I will not go back to gells using the fingers if I can help it.
A cheap 24mm synthetic brush will give years of pleasure and will dry quickly when towel dried quickly and left standing in the open air and will be ready for the next shave the next day.

It's designed to just apply with hands, but people have managed to lather it with a brush. Whatever works for you is fine. I like brush. It's a preference.

And then, there is Trader Joes, Mango +? shaving cream.....apply water then the cream w hands....no brush needed (non lathering); it better than most.

I rub it into my wet whiskers with my fingers to get the requisite amount on my face, and then take the damp brush to it to face lather. Works for me.
I only apply around the chin area spreading it so it sticks well and then lather it up with a damp brush. So when I start out there's nothing on the cheeks or the neck or the upper lip.
