Shaving cream/soap aftershave combinations

I know full well that this is a YMMV type of thread, but as a long time wet shaver, I am curious about what you gents think are good pairings with various soaps and creams. I know that some may well be obvious like Old Spice with Old Spice and Tabac with Tabac but I would like to know what some of you pair with some of the others like TOBS Avocado cream or GFT Violet soap/cream. I realize that the list could go on Ad infinitum, but a few of the most common would be helpful to me and perhaps others. I have shied away from aftershaves and colognes in the past few years but I want to renew the habit so I would appreciate any of your thoughts.

Thanks Gents,

Doug

Today I paired palmolive soap with Blue Stratos a/s seemed to go together quite well very 70s I,m thinking
Tomorrow I plan to pair Mama Bears creme brulee soap with Pinaud Clubman Vanilla for dessert type shave
Any lavender soap or cream I usually use Blenhiem Bouquet, any rose soap or cream I use hammam bouquet

This thread isn't getting much activity so perhaps someone could direct me to a previous thread that covered this topic.

Thanks,

Doug

Soap/AS combinations, eh?

well... most of the soap I use has long since lost its scent, so it doesn't matter....

But. Seriously.

The scents for most soaps & creams don't last too long past the shave, so I really don't worry too much about matching... unless I use a particularly scentlicious soap. For instance - if I use Trumpers Rose, or any of the QED roses, etc, I'll probably follow with rose toilet water (Bigelow) or Thayer Rose witch hazel... and then some rosy edt (#88).

I love Mama Bear's Lilac Ice followed by (ahem) one of the Lilac Vegetals in my arsenal. (NOT Pinaud!)

And, of course, Old Spice, Clubman, AV, English Leather - those after shaves follow anything well!

I agree with this statement. Maybe my nose isn't that sensitive but other than Proraso I don't really smell my soap or cream when I'm done. I usually slap some witch hazel on and then use whichever AS I feel like putting on.

One caution-smelling tends to extinguish very quickly-that is, when constantly exposed to a scent we tend not to notice it-so it may be difficult to be sure that any scents we are using are not layering, combining in a less than salubrious way. A person with a fresh and brief exposure, however, would be able to smell it.

Although I have plenty of scented soaps and creams I know that in the future, I will tend to buy stuff with less scent. I now prefer the idea of a soap like MWF which is easily combined with almost any AS or cologne.

I usually combine floral soaps/creams with floral AS. AoS Lavender goes great with DR Harris Aftershave Milk, for example. Not very imaginative, am I?

Tabac and Lilac Vegetal

Williams and Aqua Velva

Trumpers Rose and (home made) DaVinci Water

MWF and Royal Violets

Gentlemens Best and Ogallala Bay Rum

Vintage Old Spice and Vintage Old Spice

C&E Nomad and Clubman

What can I say, I'm a sucker for inexpensive Aftershaves.

Sometimes I care about matching my shave and sometimes I don't.

I tend to like certain scents in shaving soaps, certain in aftershaves, and certain in bath soaps.

For example today I used a lavender shaving soap and a limes aftershave and an almond bath soap.

Every Friday is Nostalgia Day for me, and I go old school. In my book, the best is Tabac soap followed by Old Spice AS/Cologne or Old Spice Burley. Either scent parts the waters of the modern aquatic crowd.

With fall arriving, I look forward to shaving with The Gentlemen's Quarter Autumn Spice shaving soap, followed by Halston's Catalyst (a great pumpkin spice), Azzaro (original), Carven Homme or KL Homme (a warmer, more subdued, cozy spice).

When winter hits, I'll warm up many cold mornings with The Gentlemen's Quarter Cavendish Black shaving cream, some Montana aftershave balm (original scent) and Montana EDT (again, original scent). This is an incense party.

For special days or evenings in fall or winter, its the Cavendish Black shaving cream followed by Cavendish Black extrait (smooth, warm and classy; very true to the pipe tobacco) or Obsession for Men AS and EDT to really kick up the heat. You gotta' love the cold weather!

I'm not particularly imaginative, usually. For example Trumper's Lime SC followed by SCS Extract of Limes aftershave milk is a favorite of mine.

But here are a couple of slightly interesting combinations I sometimes use:

Mama Bear Frankincense and Myrhh soap with Prada aftershave. The scents marry together really well.

SCS "candy cane" (peppermint) soap with Everyman Jack Cooling aftershave gel and C&S Oxford and Cambridge EDC.

My favorite combo is TOBS Sandalwood, and AOS Sandalwood Aftershave Balm.. The original formula balm. That scent lasted darn near all day and was a real head turner.. My professor in university thought something was burning!

My preference is soaps with a mild/fleeting smell. Then I can pick most any AS that is appealing without worrying that the scent will conflict with the soap smell. YMMV for sure.
