Shave of the Week Society (SWS)

ROCNEL- SHEHERAZADE SHAVE

Three Days Whiskers

MUSIC: Sheherazade, Nikolai Rimski-Korsakov, Herbert Von Karajan, Berliner Philarmoniker, a 1984 editing from a 1967 recording.

PRE-SHAVE:

- Hot Shower

- Proraso Pre-Shave Cream Cypress and Vetyver

BOWL: SV Shaving Grail (IT)

SOAP: SV Desert Vetiver (IT)

BRUSH: SV. Ebony 2.0 Manchurian 26X55 mm (IT)

SR: Rocnel Sailor SS 2024 (TUR) -

My new toy is above all very efficient and smooth. Beyond its construction quality and finishing it is blessed with a touch of unmistakable artistry.
After this première it'll be - in its own right - among my best adjustables and top-tier safety razors.
I played a little with the clicks. And even used the Dot Mark (Zero) for under the nose - a very convenient feature.

2.5 - 3 - 4 for the 3 passes. And 1.0 XTG on Neck. Nothing was left over.
Amazing. I suspect there will be a tie between the Sailor and the Taiga. Due to my lack of experience on both that's all I can say for now.

I like the convex top cap of this version.
Ride the cap and you'll be rewarded in heaven's shave.

BLADE: Gillette 7 O'Clock Super Platinum Premium - Black (INDIA) (1)

POST-SHAVE:

- 444 Alum-Block (PT)

- SMN Lozione Dopo Barba (IT)

- Vichy Homme Sensi-Baume (FR)

THE SHAVE

10/10. As simple as that. Period.

Is it swell time?
I will be shaving with my Gillette ABC Pocket Edition for most of next week, while using a vintage Wizamet Iridium blade and my trusty Razorock 400 brush. I will be rotating soaps as I am documenting another Brush Chronicle.

Happy shaves everyone!

SALT & PEPPER SHAVE

Vintage April 2025

Two Days Whiskers

PRE-SHAVE:

- Hot Shower

- Proraso Pre-Shave Cream Cypress and Vetyver (IT)

BOWL: Brass Singing Bowl (TIB)

SOAP: Palmolive Sensitive Aloe Vera (IT)

BRUSH: Shavemac Beehive Orange & Bronze Silvertip D01, 56×28 mm (D)

SR: Leresche 77 (FR)

This somehow rare vintage french safety razor, perhaps the most famous Leresche of all, has the smile of a White Shark. Displaying one of the most original designs I've ever come across.
The Leresche 77 was issued in the 1930s. 1937 for sure, but perhaps earlier, and went on until the late 1950s. I
cannot date mine with precision.

While having this spooky smile it is astoundingly smooth and provides a tidy wonderful efficient shave. The head geometry with the reverse teeth is
per se a masterpiece of machinery.
An angle bigger than 30 ⁰ (Shallow) is advised for a better performance.
The main disadvantage regarding this razor is its large head, which reduces its agility, especially in the mustache area.

Mine comes with the original case. The two cylindrical tubes look like traditional salt and pepper shakers, hence the title.

SR: Gillette Nacet Vintage (Eng)(1)

- You never know where a vintage blade leads you to. This one is in pretty good shape.

POST-SHAVE:

- 444 Alum-Block (PT)

- Stirling Bay Rum (US)

- La Toja After-Shave Balm (SP)

THE SHAVE:

Three passes, when only two were needed, but I had really missed this razor.
Some pick-ups and... a 10/10.

VELVET SAUSALITO SHAVE

Two Days Whiskers

MUSIC: Loaded by Velvet Underground, 1970. A special edition mostly with early versions and demo tracks.

BOWL: Costa Nova Fine Stoneware (PT)

SOAP: Wool Fat Shaving Soap (Tallow) (GB)

BRUSH: Progress Vulfix V2236S Superbadger 26×57 mm (GB) -

They sure know how to make brushes...

SR: Brumml Sausalito Torsioner (D) -

This is a superb Slant, two pieces, silver plated.
Awesome looks. Very efficient, nimble and butterly smooth.
A rebranded Merkur for the American Market.

Hoffritz, Adams, Brumml Sausalito, Coles, Pomco, Walter Busch, Zorro, Eros, J.A. Henckels, Lunawerk, Weck, A&F Co., D. Corrado, Grafco, Landauer, Cosmo, Chessman. These brands, some german some from the USA, have something in common, they all partially or totally sold REBRANDED Merkurs.
From the 17 brands quoted above, perhaps there's plenty more, Brumml Sausalito was referenced to California. They are pretty rare. The model displayed here - a slant (torsioner) - is most commonly seen by Hoffritz, among the rebranded and by Merkur itself.

This Sausalito possibly is from the 1960s, but it can be either from the 1950s. Impossible to date it with certainty.

BLADE: Merkur Imperial (D) (1) -

Impeccably stored, it's in pretty good shape.

POST-SHAVE:

- 444 Alum-Block (PT)

- Aqua Velva After Shave Lotion (US)

- Avène After-Shave Balm (FR)

THE SHAVE:

Three Passes and quite mild pick-ups.
Easy, easy 10/10 - It almost feels like cheating!

Starting with this morning's shave, my setup for the week will use:

Razor: Leaf Thorn (WTG) then Leaf Twig (XTG and touchups)
Blade: Gillette 7 O'clock Green
Cream: Barbasol. Today I used some Cremo Sage & Citrus as the base
AS: Today I used Proraso Red. Will likely use Duke Cannon the rest of the week as it is heating up here.

Grace and peace to all!

MULCUTO APRIL SHAVE

MUSIC: Combat Rock by The Clash, 1982.

Three Days Whiskers

PRE-SHAVE:

- Hot Shower

- Proraso Pre-Shave Cream Cypress and Vetyver (IT)

BOWL: Aluminium (PT)

SOAP: Buly Crème Pogonotomienne (FR)

BRUSH: Geo F Trumper Two Wood Three Band Silvertip, 24 mm (GB)

SR: Mulcuto Solingen Schrägschnitt (D)

"Schrägschnitt" means Oblique Cut.

This particular model is from the 1940s, WW2 time.

Many slants torsion the blade to get the oblique effect. And the two safety bars of those razors are mirrored, absolutely opposed.

Here it's the top cap which has a screw implanted in an oblique manner that determines the oblique anatomy of the base plate. The blade is minimally stressed and only anteroposteriorly curved as it happens in normal Safety Razors. It is not submitted to a torsion effect. The safety bars from both sides are aligned and not simetrically opposed.

The top cap has a lateral crest that must match a similar one on the baseplate for a correct unit mounting.
The top cap has an unequal elevation that facilitates the maintenance of the obliquity as one rides the cap.

The faceted handle permits only the sufficient grip, nothing spectacular.
The weight of the razor leans toward the head.

The whole SR looks like comming out of a medieval blacksmith's forge. An apparent primitive design that gained an innovation prize for the brand in 1932 at an exhibition in London.

This razor shaves very safely with a very feeble blade feel - it's unimaginably smooth.
It's advisable to ride the cap to keep the correct angle. The whole utilization is very intuitive.

Due it's high top cape it can be a bit awkward under the nose. But there you can go easily ATG if the shaving angle is respected. In matter of fact it's one of the few razors I go ATG under the nose with no problem.

A two pass shave is more than enough plus some retouches (few). An amazing 80 y.o. "rasierapparat", efficient since the day it was born.

Note: Originally this razor came with dual edge blades, dual cut. Vorrasur (Pre Shave) and Nachrasur (Post-Shave).
So the same blade had two edges with different class efficiency.

BLADE: Gillette Platinum Vintage (ENG) (2) -

Awesome!

POST-SHAVE:

- 444 Alum-Block (PT)

- Cella Lozione Dopobarba (IT)

- Cosmia Men After-Shave Balm (FR)

THE SHAVE:

Very efficient Two Pass Shave with little blade-buffing. A 10/10.
Perhaps the best shave of the year until now. If BBS exists than this is it!

TINTIN SHAVE

One Day Whiskers

ALBUM BD: Les Aventures de Tintin, L'Ile Noire by Hergé, Casterman 1938.

PRE-SHAVE:

- Hot Shower

- Proraso Pre-Shave Cream Cypress and Vetyver (IT)

BOWL: Coconut Shell (SP)

SOAP: Lea Hard Soap (SP)

BRUSH: Simpson Chubby 2 Superbadger Butterscotch 28 mm (GB)

SR: Kirby, Beard & Co. SCL Head 1936 (FR) -

Though traceable since 1816, Kirby, Beard & Co. still holds a measure of mystery.
They started in England, but achieved getting a major retail store in Paris. After many years making needles and pins, as well some jewelry, they saw a new business opportunity in selling safety razors.
Apparently it was Leresche, a french company with skillful technique and experience, that made exclusive models for KBC.
This razor of mine which dates back to 1936 has a magnificent distinctive scalloped top cap and an art déco handle which evokes Darwin's. Everything in it perspires class with an excellent quality construction.
It shaves well and smoothly. It is on the mild side with medium efficiency. Still a pleasure to use and look at.

BLADE: Gillette Nacet Vintage (ENG) (3)

POST-SHAVE:

- 444 Alum-Block (PT)

- Brut Original After-Shave (FR)

- La Toja After-Shave Balm (SP)

THE SHAVE:

Two Passes plus some pick-ups.
9/10

- Musgo Real Pre-Shave Oil (PT)

BOWL: Aluminium (PT)

SOAP: Musgo Real Black Edition Cream (PT)

BRUSH: C&S N 88 Silvertip Aluminium 52×20 mm (GB) -

A small and much capable Silvertip with a surprisingly heavy handle with great ergonomics and grip.
Due to its size it's a candidate for travelling.

SR: Herkenrath Ben-Hur (D) -

I have already write a lot today about this razor...
Not efficient as the Mulcuto nor the Merkur Torsioner, but more than a 34 C HD for sure.
It is very friendly razor ATG.
I don't know what is a daily driver, but this could be one of them.

Didn't loose its balance. Still performing very good.
