Seeking Recommendations for Natural Shave Creams

As a reformed "natural product" consumer of food and beauty products, such is no guarantee as to the goodness or effectiveness of a given product. Just because something is listed as "natural" doesn't mean it's good for your skin. When it comes to shaving substances, I say use whatever gives you the best shave with the least/zero irritation of the skin. Heck, I found that Schick's Skintimate and Gillette Satin Care shave gels , and even Barbasol Aloe to be the only shaving substances I've tried that either don't irritate my face or offer a sufficient glide and buffer.

Additionally, I have found that quality control is often lacking with natural/organic products except for the high end ones or long standing and well-established brands. It's hard to even find good quality food these days, so if a particular brand is sourcing ingredients from a place that itself started out with bad raw materials (e.g. rancid nuts or oils), the end product will probably also not be all that great. I've bought natural body oils direct from the manufacturer site that smelled rancid and caused a skin reaction when used. That said, I still do prefer to stick with natural/clean brands, where clean means they would, e.g., pass screening from EWG (not every product I use is listed there).

Interestingly there are ZERO products for men's shaving cream or soap that are EWG certified.

For creams:

For soaps:

For body oil, e.g., there are several brands that are EWG certified:

I ran a "Build Your Own Report" for Muhle Organic and it reported it as a 4 (Fair).
Full report is attached as pdf.

If you know someone in the business of making creams and soaps, you could suggest to them to make something that could meet EWG certification. :D

I’d look for European products, cosmetics are more highly regulated then the US, and in the EU, the term ‘Bio’ means something that can be measured/proven. If you don’t mind your cream being a croap, the ingredients list don’t get much ‘cleaner’ than Martin de Candre.

The ingredients in their newer soaps are different.

This is for their Unscented:
AQUA; STEARIC ACID; PALMITIC ACID; COCOS NUCIFERA OIL; POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE; GLYCERIN; SODIUM CHLORIDE; ALCOHOL; STYRAX TONKINENSIS RESIN EXTRACT

This is for their Original:
AQUA; STEARIC ACID; PALMITIC ACID; COCOS NUCIFERA OIL; POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE; GLYCERIN; SCENT ; SODIUM CHLORIDE; EUGENOL; GERANIOL; LIMONENE; LINALOOL.

There appear to be a few products that are EWG certified. Maybe those are unisex that's why they didn't show up in my earlier search. A couple of them appear to be discontinued though. These are some that are still available.

Two I'm most familiar with are Speick and Cella Extra Extra Bio in the Green jar or tube. They are pretty reasonably priced products.
These are both excellent choices and reasonably priced, too. I also desire to add TFS Crema Purissima Per Barba, here in Italy sold at only €1.95.

I think that the other than palmitic acid in the two newest soaps, the ingredients in MdC have been the same. Most of always them contained benzoin resin (styrax) for example. The difference may be a change in EU labeling requirements.

There is another product I'd suggest which is a "hybrid" soft soap from Signature Soaps in the UK. All of their shaving soaps are natural vegan products that use only essential oils for fragrance. I'd suggest the scent called Coria, but they are all good in their own way. They also have some that are completely unscented.
Not all their soaps are vegan. At least this one contains goat milk.

Oh, right, most of their soaps are vegan and they have a few with goat milk. So, if you want vegan, just choose one without the goat milk. They are good soaps, though.

I was looking at a few them (e.g. the pure lavender) and the color was a turn off for me.

What's wrong with the color? It's a tan, natural soap color without any dyes or coloring added, right?

IMHO, ,you are missing out. I got them at a good price, too, which helps.

BTW, they added more soaps with goat milk since I looked last time. Goat milk soap seems to be popular, but still only a few of the ones they offer.

It's not an even color.

It's not an even color.

I see what you mean, not very photogenic. Reminds me of some Stirling soaps I've seen, with a rougher texture. My two were not like that, though. They were more uniform dark tan. I think the darker color comes from the Rhassoul clay used in the soap.

Still, a good ingredients list, no artificial anything, only essential oils for scent, good performance, 180g per container, all that counts for something. Also, it's a fairly firm soap that lasts much longer than many of the artisan type soaps.
