Scuttle vs. Bowl

Yes, scuttle = warm lather. But that's reason enough for many of us, myself included.

The straightrazor scuttle would be way too small for me. I have the Georgetown G12, which I find to be the perfect size (I also own another much larger Becker scuttle). I hold it in my left hand while building lather with no problem.

I know this is more about size but with all these scuttle users here i has a question;

would any of you use a scuttle if you face lather?

I face lather at the moment but would like warm lather in the winter. I'm probably going to get one soon as a shop down the road does some nice locally made scuttles but i don't know if face lathering still would defeat the purpose. I can imagine leaving the brush with lather in the scuttle during passes with the razor so that i have warm lather for reapplication.

Just from what's been said here about some scuttles being too small to lather in it seems logical.

Am i deluded?

Based on your experiences will this work?

Buy a brush scuttle. I think I saw some on dirty Bird's website and Mick/Turtle I believe has posted a photo of one

As you can see I like room, as in BIG. These are Becker Scuttles. I have had these for a number of years now thus I don't remember the model number's of them. The smaller scuttle I use for a brush soak and warmer between passes. A little quirky perhaps, but I can't stand the clinking of my brush as I am whipping up a lather. This larger scuttle affords me the room to just whirl, pump and whip up a great lather with no annoying clinking. I use a scuttle year round. Just a view from the cheap seats....

I use both scuttles and bowls, just depends on my mood.
The thing I like about a scuttle is that you can sit it on a counter and lather with it in place. Really nice when my arthritis flairs up and I don't want to hold a bowl.
And you can use a scuttle without water in the the resivoir. I do it all the time.

I used a bowl for a while, but once I started using a scuttle I was sold. I keep my daughter's old hot pot from her dorm room and fill the scuttle with boiling water just before my shower. Then, when it's time to lather I have a nice hot lather for my face. It's the best feeling.

I use a George Town Pottery scuttle and alternate with a Symmetrical Pottery dottie shaving bowl that gives more lather than you've ever seen. The texture of the dots whips tons of air into your shaving soaps lather. The bowl can also be placed in your sink filled with warm water to keep the soap warm for your second or third pass. This is what they look like for $45

That's a beautiful bowl.

I use this Shawn Summers bowl, which is similarly "different" than the usual ridges, etc. Wonderful bowl as well.

I use a scuttle everyday. My favorite is my 12 ounce made by Robert Becker. When lathering, insert your thumb through handle and this allows you to palm the scuttle. Not cumbersome at all. I want warm lather even during summer.

I got my hands on the Georgetown Pottery G15 and things just haven't been the same. I had to do without on a recent trip to China and suffered with a cold lather. Year round, there is nothing quite as pleasurable as heated lather applied with a silvertip brush. Warm and silky are adjectives that are meant for each other.

I use a scuttle year round. As you can see I like room to lather a bit quirky perhaps, but I can't stand the sound of my brush clinking against the sides of a scuttle. I am more of a painter than a face latherer. These are two Becker scuttles. I don't recall the #'s on these as I have these for a number of years. The smaller scuttle I use as a brush warmer between passes. The larger speaks for itself. Just a view from the cheap seats....

I use the g12 scuttle. I forget who makes it but it is perfect. There is a g20 that is larger, however the g12 stays plenty warm for me. I only use the scuttle in the Fall/Winter.

Do the scuttles work well for soap? i.e. Not just keeping your lather warm but building your soap lather as you do in a bowl.

Yeah, they work great. You can see mine in action in the first few minutes of this video.

I have three scuttles, one a Moss standard, my first, which I discovered is a little small after finding a couple of custom made models here that no one else wanted. I like the larger for whipping up a lather, and am finding that I use them the most in cooler weather, face lathering in warmer weather.
