roaduck meanderings

This is just my experience of using traditional soaps over 45 years.

3-4 Ingredient vegetable soaps like Marseille, Aleppo, Nablus, trad Greek and Italian - very high content Olive oil are hygroscopic - ie : the super-fatted glycerine sweats (has beads of moisture all over it) and takes moisture literally out of the air - it does not need a snowdrift of white lather to accomplish a shaving medium because it is so so slick and the 72%-100% vegetable oil soap gets right inside the skin and the plant oils go through the capillaries into the bloodstream because the essential oil molecules are so small - that is old-fashioned herbal medicine - I'm a herbalist.

Don't forget before the Iron Age people used Bronze razors with Olive oil and Coconut Oil a lot of the time - there is still modern shaving oils - some very good.

4000 years ago Egyptians used Castor Oil which is the most penetrating of oils and instantly conditions the skin and in no time it's a skating rink for the razor.

With Coconut oil and most good quality vegetable oils you don't even need soap to shave.

I was thinking of getting a couple more safety razors and then I thought...

Wait...round them all up and check how many I already had.

I thought I had about fifty but altogether with the travel ones - it's seventy plus !

So...definitely not buying anymore - maybe just one decent vintage carbon cut-throat because mine is only a budget £10 one that is only soft stainless steel and is dire.

I joined B&B 4th October and I had less than ten razors so I bought another 60 odd in 6 months - Wow - it's so easy to get carried away.

So the moral of the story is get half a dozen razors, a couple of brushes, two hundred blades and ten shaving sticks and a couple of aftershaves for example and go on holiday with the money you've saved - HaHa !

Since joining the forum I've overspent on frags, soaps & tackle - but it's worth it because I'm happier, groomed and smell okay !

The bamboo handle is very beautiful. I would like to know where it was purchased

Hiya Jamie83 here's some piccies - it's a 4 piece; the top bit screws into the bamboo handle.

It has standard 5mm metric threads so most heads should fit making it interchangeable but if you put a heavier head on it it will alter the balance; an aluminum one from Henson or Yaqi or even an old Gillette ali travel head would be ideal I think; I've got some I could try.

It is very light at less than an ounce and I think it's got a nice medium gap and smooth action; it's not a super mild one but you can tweak it with another head lol !

If you negotiate with the seller you can get it a different length with your name on it etc.

I think it's nice and unusual being bamboo root not stem with is denser and the stock one is less than $10 inc p&p.
