You're right. Diphenhydramine HCL does have sedative properties, but a small dose (1/2 tab) with a few of glasses of wine has never been a problem for me.

The pharmacist recommends using caution when mixing the two-- and of course not driving. But said it's not particularly dangerous, unless I was out to take a very large dose of Benadryl and pound down a bunch of booze.

I wouldn't suggest taking two tabs and then drinking a whole bottle of wine. You'd probably be feeling very fuzzy, but even then I doubt it would constitute a health emergency.

Both my wife and I sometimes experience the "red wine headache," and both of us find that pinot noir is the one red that doesn't cause it. I'm just curious if this is true for anyone else.

I think you didn't drink enough !
Try additional 1-2 bottle maybe !

Guaranteed? Benadryl doesn't make me drowsy me whatsoever.

I've had much better luck with some of the newer over the counter allergy pills, they're pretty close to side-effect free.

I wouldn't say they're side effect free, but most tend not to make a majority of the population drowsy. Still many not nearly as effective as Benadryl in terms of antihistamine properties. There is a reason they still market the stuff after all.

Yes it is. They also use it in Tylenol PM.
