Hmm, I forgot about that. I probably have a week to wait until it arrives, but some recommendations/precautions would be appreciated. I was thinking about a Bic Astor for some reason. I know you can't use anything less sharp than a Wizamet.I find it mid-aggressive
but it's very blade picky in my experience.
Actually I've been using Astra SP's (Russia) lately on razors that tend to be on the more aggressive side and have been getting good results. Matter of fact, I bought 300 of them last week to maximize my stock.Hmm, I forgot about that. Same here, I haven't tried the old one so I don't have that frame of reference. But I find the zamak version to be nicely efficient but only really aggressive if you don't respect it. I don't feel like I have to baby it unless I'm using a Feather. It seems to work well with pretty much all the blades I use (which isn't that many) and it's given me a newfound appreciation for my GSBs. But it works well for me with blades like Durasharps as well. But I haven't tried the old one and can say that I don't feel it as a super aggressive razor. I find it mid-aggressive
but it's very blade picky in my experience.
Aaron, have you tried the Oneblade razor (Genesis, Hybrid, etc) with the new blades from Oneblade? Same basic idea as the Proof, but a sharp, rigid blade. I love it. Even bought my son one.Weird shave with the medium Henson today.
I haven't used this one in a long time, I always just use the aggressive(since I have two). I know very well where it is lacking from past experience, but I had hoped that my technique would produce a different result after so much time. On the other hand, the Proof razor is impressing me more and more and I needed to see how much the Henson exceeds it in capability. Spoiler: it's better than the Henson!
So let's get this out of the way, I spent plenty of time on facial prep and got a very nice lather for this shave. I even watered it down more than I would normally so the Henson wouldn't lather plane as Thom calls. I used a blade from the exact same pack of Schicks which work nicely in the aggressive version even. The shave was uneventful, and not worth detailing much, and pretty fast. I stuck with my new routine of WTG, XTG/ATG and final half pass on the jaw corners. I am 100% certain that I didn't get exuberant and apply pressure, I treated it like I was using the aggressive.
This didn't feel right, it wasn't painful, but it was very obviously scrapping my skin! It's so weird to notice how rigid a DE blade is after using a pivoting head. That's OK by itself, but again it didn't feel any less aggressive than the aggressive version. What really matters to me is the results and they are both typical and surprising when compared to the Proof razor. Remember, I have never been a cartridge shaver so the whole pivoting thing is a process of discovery for me(no bias either way). First, the results are amazingly comparable between the two; the Henson does a little better on everything but the jaw and much worse there. This is exactly how I remember it, no improvement found. Clearly, there is something to the pivot and its ability to follow curves. Still, I resisted over shaving the jaw line and stuck with the plan. I saved the weirdest part for last: this shave felt like a noticeable jump on the FIS and that sensation still hasn't let up. It's going straight to 4 and that's being generous, I have no idea how this happened even though I could feel it happening real time! Remember I rated the FIS of the Proof, down from 3, as a 2 after discovering my beard growing straight out the next day. That was a puzzling result that I was able to replicate three more times on the same blade. What is this Henson's problem/excuse? I certainly don't have an answer, I used a sharp enough blade.
I already moved the blade to the v1 aggressive for the next shave to see if it feels any different. I bet it won't and it will still deliver a closer shave. The medium only got one chance and now it's going back to being a pretty looking display item. I would have already bought the brass Proof razor, against my better judgement, but they already sold out. Maybe in the Spring they will make another batch, hopefully not(lol). I am hoping that I hate the R41GS that I ordered so I can reclaim my funds after trying it, I don't seem to be into aggressive razors right now. Maybe it will be a revelation, it certainly will be different than anything I have tried other than the Fatip Grande OC. The width across the cap on the R41 is greater so I am hopeful that it will be educational at least.
Kicking myself for not getting it while it was on sale, we talked about it...Aaron, have you tried the Oneblade razor (Genesis, Hybrid, etc) with the new blades from Oneblade? Same basic idea as the Proof, but a sharp, rigid blade. I love it. Even bought my son one.
It's on sale now. 20% off!Kicking myself for not getting it while it was on sale, we talked about it...
I just wasn't convinced of the pivots value, had just gotten the Proof to try. There is no way I am paying full price one week after it was on sale unfortunately. It does sound like it would be interesting to me, but one of its potential values may not work out. Trying to get it through security as a normal razor, the Proof is more convincing.
Murphy and Mcneil sells the Genesis used for about $175. It came in the box in very good condition (but needed to be cleaned)Kicking myself for not getting it while it was on sale, we talked about it...

That’s my current position as well. Even though I read or understand that the GS is different from the current Zamak version.I have nearly bought the SS version multiple times since I like the razor so much, but I decided to just buy a backup zamak head
Interesting... thank you. I would probably get a hybrid if I am going to go used, I think Larry liked his(but sold it of course). I don't like the fact that I have to order blades separately from Oneblade, that's annoying. I will think about it...Murphy and Mcneil sells the Genesis used for about $175. Yeah, it's a proprietary system. When I bought my first Genesis, I also bought the pins and springs that hold it together, along with enough FHS-10 blades to last me my lifetime (noting that it shares a rotation with a *few* other razors). Then I bought a second one (which I gifted to my son) and a used one. Then a big old pile of the new HiCarbon blades. I won't ever need to buy any more blades nor worry about the life expectancy of the company.Interesting... thank you. Thanks for the encouragement Mark, that price I got made it impossible to say no! I don't even think I will want to upgrade to the Genesis since this one has a lite handle. I made a post here:Hope you like it! Love to see a .pic and hear about the details of your new toy!
