Post Shave Balm

I have been using ARKO Shaving soap and Cremo Cooling Formula Post Shave Balm and really enjoy it.

I am about out and was wondering what other Soaps and post shave balms would people recommend.

I have been straight razor shaving for almost a year so I am sure there are other products that are worth investigating also.

Thanks in advance.

I use Nivea or Cremo when I need a balm, which is unusual. I have some B&M balm, but I haven't tried it.

Normally I use alcohol splash.

If my skin has some irritation, I still normally go for something soothing that isn't greasy, like Tiger, Proraso green, or Dickinsons.

Sometimes when I do want oil and moisturizer, I just use regular lotion.

I use Arko exclusively and rarely need any post shave treatment. I don't like the greasiness of balms I've had and my skin leans oily. If I need anything at all to cool down a rough shave, I use Aloderma Aloe Vera Gel.

I grew tired of having so many different products. If I want a balm, I just use a tiny amount of Cerave cream diluted with a little water, as a finishing step. It has no scent of its own and is very versatile so it's not just for shaving. Men, women or children can use it. It sinks in right away without any greasy feeling.

I don’t like the greasy feeling of balms.
I wouldn't either. I have very dry skin, so a moisturizer is a requirement. I've tried quite a few and like the Clinique Moisturizer for Men the best (my understanding is that it's the same formula as the one for women - that one might be a tiny bit thinner, but I'm not sure).

I like something in a tube (makes it easier to avoid using too much) that melts/incorporates into the skin almost immediately, and that's the Clinique. There's a popular white one, but I find I have to rub a bit too much before it incorporates (disappears?). That's not something I particularly want to do right after I shave. Hawkins and Brimble was nice, but there's an ingredient in there that irritates my face.

Generally, the greasy feeling is from using more than your skin can absorb. I had a bottle of Castle Forbes that was excellent, but it only required 2 drops - which were hard to come by with the generous opening in the bottle. Any more and I'd find a film on my cell phone.

I like Nivea sensitive cool. It uses seaweed extract as opposed to menthol for the cooling effect, so it's a little more subtle. Proraso blue is another favorite. I've refrained from using balms in the past because as Quaznoid mentioned, many have a greasy feeling, and I don't like that either. I don't get the greasy feeling from these two products though.

I've started to use Weleda post shave balm, a little goes a long way and imho its really good at the job its made for. Smells a little citrus and lavender and pairs well with spiek cologne.

Nivea Sensitive or Cremo Heritage Post Shave Balm.

My old skin is pretty dry, and it only gets worse in the winter, so a balm helps immensely.

Depending on how the morning shave went:

Nivea Men Sensitive Soothing Post Shave Balm
Proraso White Post Shave Balm
Vanicream Lite Moisturizing Cream for Sensitive Skin

The Proraso and Vanicream are unscented, so they won't clash with aftershave/cologne scents. The Proraso has the heaviest, or as some may say, "greasiest," feel on the skin. You can rinse it off later in the day and your skin will still feel moisturized. If you've had a rough shave it'll calm angry skin better.

The Vanicream and Nivea may need a second application later because they're lighter at moisturizing.

Some good ideas here to investigate! I have been thinking that I've had a years-long love/hate relationship with Nivea Sensitive Men. It's pretty much required in the winter when relative humidity goes down into the single digits here. I love it for that, but the scent is not my favourite. Seems kinda pointless to pick out soaps that smell nice when the Nivea comes along after and that's all I smell like.

I'm really not a huge fan of fragrance, anyway. I'm looking around for a good unscented balm.

O.H.

If you're looking for a pure "balm", as opposed to an aftershave-balm, I'd consider trying Saponificio Varesino's Pro Victis.

Good stuff.

I’ve noticed a couple people mentioning ASB’s being greasy, but I think that’s very much a product-specific issue. I’ve found Soap Commander, Stirling and Tabac to be not greasy (compared to others which are definitely moreso).
