Gillette bought Astra in 1996, so I emailed Gillette and asked them what the numbers are for. Maybe they will email back!

Those are there to identify each side of each edge of the blade. Yeah, it's a blade with two cutting edges, but each edge is created by two grindings/honings at manufacture time. If you're doing QC, you want to know which side of each edge you're looking at or working on.

We have limited information on Astra blades, as they aren't typically sold in North America. However, per R&D, the number on the blades is a manufacturing date code system. I hope this answers you question.

I am not 100% confident that the person who answered the email knows what they are saying, but at least we don't really have to guess!

So all the Astra blades were made at the same time? I thought they were currently being manufactured!Since they aren't typically sold in N. America, how have so many guys here been fortunate enough to use them?
