Please recommend me a fall jacket

Another vote for REI's jackets. I've got a few and wear them regularly.

Though I'd also recommend picking up a classic A2 bomber jacket. I have one that's not terribly authentic, though I like it a lot. I'll probably save up a bit and get one of the high-quality reproductions. They're always in style and will last a lifetime if cared for.

+1 (again) on Barbour. They are pricey ($375-450), and you do have to rewax them from time to time, or send them back to Barbour North America to do so, but they are serious outerwear. And the detachable hood design is great, it has a copper wire inside that keeps the hood off your face and can be folded completely flat against the jacket when not in use. I recommend the Border, I wear it with casual clothes but also think the longer length looks great over suits, as in "yes I have to be at this meeting but afterward I'm going back to the barn to help birth a foal.... in a sleet storm." :001_smile

I am not very fashionable just now with jackets. I layer everything. My shell this year is a North Face Flight Series waterproof-breathable shell with a hood. I am looking for the fleece jacket to go under it. If really cold, I have a puffy down jacket which fills up the shell. Of course, all of this is backed up with dry-wicking polyester super underwear if I will be in the woods.

I am not a big fan of the large, heavy winter coat. It is just too much. In NC, I do not even keep much of a sweater around. I think I have exactly one left. The only sweater of use in this mild climate would be a classic Perry Como cardigan. I would feel like Mister Rogers in this one, so would not work at all. I'd sooner be caught in a half-rotted bear skin.

Check out the Studio Donegal website for some great looking Donegal Tweed coats and waistcoats, all completely made right in Donegal itself.
