Old Stock Proraso (Amazon purchase)

So, I bought some Proraso (red tub) from Amazon. It was rock hard. Given I hadn’t used it before, I wasn’t sure if this is how it was supposed to be. But I poked a bunch of holes in it and then added a bunch of hot water and it’s starting to break down a bit now so it’s not all lost. It’s a fraction of the price of TOBS and it smells just as good. Just thought I’d share — Amazon third-party store-fronts are not all equal. I am sure I could have returned it but didn’t know any better.

I’m not super happy with the tubs that I buy off and on and in my opinion the tubes are much more consistent but even there it could happen that you will receive an overaged one that hardened up.

My current Red has developed cracks corresponding with they way it was filled while other croaps in the same price bracket just form an even surface after a couple of uses.

Your tub is very very old is what I can tell you. Much more than 3 years from manufacture date. People with sensitive skin can even get irritation from it.

@riffinrich , @Multum in parvo , Sorry to see you were sent old stock that should have been salvaged out. There is a lot of old inventory floating around the sellers on Amazon.

I have one tub of Prorasso Red that I only use a few times a year - often primarily to superlather one of my hard soaps.. It definitely drys out over time. I keep it hydrated by using a very wet brush when loading a small amout to superlather another soap. Has worked so far for this roughly four year old tub that is around 60% full.

Generally I've found that this soap lathers really well. Slickness, while good, is not at the level of my other soaps and creams - hence my use of it as a superlather agent. In fact most of what was used went into some of my custom blended hard soap pucks to ensure better lather. I do give Prorasso credit for engineering a scent that, while almost unpleasant straight from the tub, comes through really nicely in the lather itself.

P.S. Plan to revisit this soap with the bowl lathering method that works well with my Razorock/TFS soft Italian soaps to see if the slickness improves by scooping plenty of product versus direct brush loading. With enough product loaded those soaps perform amazingly well.

What have you found is the best way to load and lather this soap?

Performance wise it’s reliable and easy to use so no complaints there.

I also don’t think that I got old stock as it is the Super Formula and the tub looked pristine when I got it. I once had a tub that turned mushy and unusable and it doesn’t look like that at the moment.

Welcome to B&B, Sir riffinrich!
Sad to hear about your old tub of Proraso!
Amazon is (still) so good about returns, I'd certainly send it back for replacement!!
Like most everyone, I'm quite sure you're returning stuff to Amazon all the time!
In any case, enjoy your shaves!

If it came from a third party, Amazon will actually make you message back and forth with the third party and work it out with them. Be aware.

Ask me about shaving naked!

I thought that was what Amazon is, where old stuff goes to be recycled, lol. BTW, never buy any food on Amazon, except maybe long-lived things like soy sauce, mustard, etc.

Their biggest weakness is that by acting as a marketplace they don't vet and test the products offered for sale in the way that traditional retailers do. Unfortunately many customers don't understand this difference.

Great example, a few years ago, when building a portable 12 volt solar power system, I bought an outlet assembly that supposedly used 100% copper wire. When I stripped the wires to change the connector type it turned out that the wires were anything buy 100% copper, likely aluminum. Suspect this was why there were some reviews, from those using this in their cars, of the wires melting down with the fuse never blowing.

Back to shaving, they sent me a supposedly new DE razor 4-5 years ago that was used, had someones used blade in it. Quickly RTV'd it to Amazon.
