What's new

New Orleans, LA

Agree!! For me, no trip to NO is complete without a visit to Cochon and Jaque Imo's. Or Cafe Fleur De Lis for their crawfish omelet.

+1

Been trying to take my In-laws to Jacque Imo's for a while when they come in town. But in the evenings it's not really a place for my 2 year old. :)

Umm... That article probably wasn't written by a local in the business. Just saying. The oysters are plentiful and great. The oysters do NOT come from the gulf, they come from inland shallow water areas. There was SOME disruption during the spill because of access and the frenzy to keep oil out of the oyster beds. Some sources were significantly disrupted. But I can assure the oyster biz is alive and well. There's even some speculation that harvests over the next few years might be the best we've seen in some time.

You might try Drago's (I recommend Metairie in Fat City, but the more convenient location is downtown) for the ORIGINAL AND BEST chargrilled oysters.
Very happy to hear that. I read another article the other day about how the drought is affecting Appalachicola oysters in the Panhandle! What?!

Is Casamento's any good for oysters? Just saw it reviewed on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives and the oysters looked fine to me!

Aidan Gill on Fulton Street. Picked up some Musgo Real Aftershave lotion. Vetiver and patchouli. A nice clean subtle masculine fragrance that the wife likes. Aidan Gill has a ton of the good stuff!

Also checked out Allen Edmonds in the Shops at Canal in the Westin. Beautiful shoes! No purchase.

Stayed close to the hotel for lunch. Grand Isle also on Fulton. Raw oysters, smoked fried oysters, tuna ceviche, and shrimp gumbo. All very good. Galveston oysters, oddly enough. I need a shucking station like they have at the bar!

Visited Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop and Cafe du Monde last evening.

What a place!!

Seeing this thread just got me really pumped up, as I will be going for a good friend's bachelor party in March. Nothing planned as of yet but we'll be staying at the Royal Sonesta in the French Quarter, and in reading through the thread I'm already writing notes on lots of good stuff to check out...
I'm a little skeptical though about Aidan Gill, which a few people mentioned. I took a couple of these guys to get their first shave last year and was looking at trying to find a shop on this trip, but on the Aidan Gill website they say “In recent history, a pioneer of the razor blade, Mr. King Camp Gillette, has produced the finest blade edges in the history of Christendom and the world. We have now arrived at the pinnacle of the sharpest of edges with the Gillette Mach 3, which we recommend as the best blade at this point in time."
not sure I can buy into that, especially if I'm trying to turn some of the other fellas onto a first-time real barbershop experience

+1 on everything here. I grew up in N'awlins, and Tom Fitzmorris is a total class act. I also totally agree on Galatoire's and the Sazarac Bar. One thing I'd reccommend: find a little mom and pop grocery store--just about anywhere in the city--and get a po-boy from their meat counter. That's how we have lunch in the city.

Hi FL,

I'm from NOLA but have lived about an hour away for many years. I've eaten at many of the best ones and still there are so many others. I've eaten at other great food cities like NYC & San Fransisco, but NOLA is without doubt the greatest food city in the country. I would spend time looking around www.nomenu.com This is the site of Tom Fitzmorris, a long-time NOLA food critic and native of the city. His advice on all aspects of New Orleans dining is spot on.

Some of my personal favorites have been Galatoire's, Clancy's, The Upperline, Gautreau's, K-Pauls, and Commander's Palace. These are all top notch.

For strictly cocktails, try the Sazerac Bar in the Roosevelt Waldorf Astoria Hotel ($$), The Carousel Bar at the Monteleone Hotel, Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop, Pat O'Briens, The Dundgeon, Cat's Meow. All of these are in the French Quarter except the Sazarac ( right across Canal St. , so it's still close. )

If you want to PM me with a phone number and a good time to talk, I could give you enough to fill a legal page off the top of my head. I know the city well. I could be a concierge for any hotel there. Cheers!

Still going here! Got up and ran Riverwalk. Had a Cella shave and finished with the Musgo Real AS lotion purchased yesterday. Walked up Poydras from the Hilton Riverside to check a couple things off the bucket list: a Saints game at the Super Dome and a poboy at Mother's. The game was "All Dat" but I'm going to say The Ferdi at Mother's was overrated. I was prepared for the attitude of the woman behind the counter, so I could only smile when she snarled, "Ain't no carryout here," when I asked where to pick up my po' boy.

Looking forward to Drago's and charbroiled oysters. Drago's is just downstairs at The Hilton Riverside.

New Orleans is a great city equipped to feed, water, entertain and educate, all those visiting by car, plane, and cruise ship (each morning 2 cruise ships dock in port!). The Super Dome was pretty much sold out, but I've never had an easier time getting into a pro sports event. The colonial streets in the French Quarter are pedestrian friendly and you make amazing discoveries at every street corner. We've felt very safe wandering the streets, haven't seen a single arrest, and it is no dirtier than many other large cities. What a weekend!

Aidan Gill IS worth a walkthrough, despite the Mach 3 thing. They have all the great software and more! You will enjoy your trip!

Forgot to mention Napoleon House dinner last night. I had red beans and rice with sausage, the wife had jambalaya, and we shared a boudin sausage. Good enough stuff and appropriately priced. Though their sazerac was voted the best of NOLA, my vote goes to the Roosevelt! Pimm's cup was good (gin and lemonade beverage), but I'll bet it's better in the heat of a New Orleans summer!

It absolutely warms my heart to hear people say such nice things about the city I love. Of course, it could be just some leftover glow from the thrashing my Saints delivered. We certainly could have run into each other Friday evening. My wife, son, and I met some friends down on Fulton st to see Santa. We walked up Canal and took a walk through the Roosevelt Hotel, and had coffee at the Teddy Cafe. Pretty awesome gingerbread version of Storyland (play area in City Park). Glad you had such a great time!

Thanks! And thanks again to all who served as travel guides. Fulton street was packed Saturday night, too. Family atmosphere for those not wanting to brave the feistier crowd on Bourbon. Saints fans are pretty impressive. Got goose bumps hearing nearly 70 thousand chant "Who Dat"!

Last NO shave was with AOS Lavender cream (liberal dollop!). AOS creams are top notch. We had a 1 pm checkout and wandered up to St. Charles in Central Business District and happened upon a little corner bistro called Herbsaint. Definitely recommend it for lunch. Had a Ledaig 10 while the wife had a Kumquat Caprinha. She had skirt steak and potato and I had another New Orleans classic; shrimp and pumpkin (don't know if pumpkin is an update) calas (Barmaid described them as fritters) with greens. Had we not started with drinks, we'd have paid the same as Mother's last night (Went back for the wife to try a po' boy instead of Drago's).

Many places to try out next time around!

oh... The L'Occitane shop at The Westin is out of Cade soap.

WOW! just saw this thread. Sorry I missed it...Glad you had a good time down here. If you come back PM me and I'll give you the grand tour.... Sav

The mall in Metairie houses a L'Occitane, Body Shop, C&E, and a few other places that have some shaving goods (Sephora, etc). There's also an AoS in Baton Rouge. And the flea markets!!! ooooo Don't get me started!

Maybe next time you're in town I'll take you to Paran's for a roast beef poyboy. Or Brother's Cafe for a Who Dat burger or their world famous (ok, only famous for me since I got them to put it on the menu) Hotdog Poboy!
