My first tallow, triple-milled soap...Thinking Tabac? Thoughts/suggestions Please!

I cannot abide by the stench of Tabac....it does lather adequately though. I would give it a good solid average as a soap.

Try Valobra or Cella for superior lathering and a stench free shave.

Well everyone - Thanks for all of the input. I finally had to pull the trigger and sent PM and Payment on some Tabac from BST, see here!

I'll be sure to post and give my thoughts on in once it arrives and I use it a few times.

Thanks again. A great response and very helpful. I do know now that I will have to add AoS and MWF to the list for next purchases (I'll have to start saving my pennies for AoS; someone mentioned it was expensive and they weren't kidding).

I'm of the "why do Tabac to yourself when there are so many other, less-stinky, options" school of thought but seeing as you have already bought it I wouldn't want to discourage you. :biggrin1: But seriously, you might as well try it now because it IS one of those iconic soaps that you'll eventually cave in on and try. Unfortunately for me, I couldn't get over the reek of it all. Let us know how it turns out. :thumbup1:

By the way, I think some other member is already using the same avatar as you...just sayin'.

I have heard great things about AOS but it is expensive.

Isn't Valobra shave stick verified as the exact same stuff as AoS pucks (other than scenting additives)? Superiorshave has it for $10 shipped if memory serves (been eying it myself).

Good to know, thanks. I haven't seen it duplicated yet, but will keep an eye out. It is the symbol for Ardbeg, which at the moment is my favorite scotch. I would suggest it to anyone who enjoys peaty scotch.

Hmmm, I have not heard of that scotch. I will have to it give it a try.

My favorite and I think most unique tasting scotch is Laphroaig. Yummmmm.

I don't understand all of the hoopla about the scent of Tabac. Yes, when you first peel away the foil cover it smells of cold cream and distilled old lady, but even after a day of airing out, it smells of pure barbershop goodness - of course I'm a newb and I only have experience with one particular puck.

DR Harris

+1 on the Harris, but I see you've already pulled the trigger on Tabac, which is a good choice. For me, the lather shaves were great with Tabac, but I eventually became disenchanted with the fragrance. Can't remember the last time I used it, actually. If/when you get sick of the smell, consider DR Harris soaps. :thumbup1:

I also like Laphroaig quite a bit. I would say that Ardbeg is a step above it, though, and would definitely suggest that you give it a try. Both are on the peatier side of the spectrum. If I remember correctly, several of the varieties of Ardbeg were awarded "Best World Whiskey" in different editions of Jim Murray's Whiskey Bible.

I also wanted to add that I have used Tabac about a half dozen times or so and really enjoy it. The performance is great and I love the scent (in fact, the aftershave made it onto the Christmas list I gave to my wife). Thanks to everyone for the input.

Tabac's one of my favorites, but you can't really go wrong with anything on the compendium. Palmolive stick, Valobra stick, Speick stick, MWF, Harris, and AOS all have huge fan followings. You might look into Cella, too, though it's not triple-milled. Great lather, easy to whip up, and a pleasant almond scent to round it all out.

You're going to end up trying them all sooner or later, anyway.

+1 on the Cella and MWF.
