My First Full Custom: The Bastard (File Razor)

If it shaves as well as it looks it will be amazing. That is a striking piece of work. To take a file and make that is great. Recycling at its finest. Can't wait to hear more.

Awesome!

Do the residual file grooves wreak havoc with your strop though?
Na, seems fine.
While it was in its annealed state, I ran the 180 greaseless on the grooves and pretty much smoothed them out.
I just finished honing it, and stropped it on my roo hide strop and all seemed fine.
My first shave with it will be this weekend:clap:

This file-razor is great! I think you really have to be a razor-phile to be able to pull off such a sweet end product- Sorry, I couldn't help it. Seriously though, gorgeous razor! Any chance you would share a shot or two of your forge setup, or do you have shots posted somewhere else that we could see? Either way, thanks for sharing!

AAArrgggh!

I read the thread admiring the fantastic work and we still don't know how it shaves a month after it was finished.

It looks brilliant. I especially like the forge picture. There are clever people hanging out around here.

How do you keep a straight razor entertained? I'll tell you how it shaves tomorrow.

I was/am in awe that someone could make that out of an old file. To be able to do that is an admirable thing. To be able to tell us how it shaves would complete the story.

I've been shaving for about forty eight years (forget the decade when I had a beard - the seventies are best forgotten anyway) but I can never say that shaving was anything but a chore until I bought a straight razor. Now every morning is an adventure...... 'Will it cut me, won't it cut me?' 'Have I honed it right or haven't It?' 'Will it hold its edge, won't it?' 'Will my new vintage razor arrive in the post today, or won't it?' 'How long will the Gold Dollar take to come from China?'

So many questions....

My wife thinks I've gone mad. Perhaps she is right.

:))

Very, very awesome. I wish I had a forge, time, and money to do projects like this. As it is, I am still trying to buy a buffer so that I can finish some of my half restores.

Beautiful work.
