My First-And Last-Scuttle

Ouch. I have a French onion soup bowl with lid that I picked up for .50¢. It has the unglazed clay bottom which offers excellent grip even with soapy hands. It's four inch width & two inch depth is perfect for lathering. You won't loose your grip on one of those! Hope you find a good alternative.

I had a DB brush scuttle with matching lather bowl. Luckily, I never dropped it, but decided it was more trouble than it was worth, So I packed it away and was able to sell it on the BST.

Scuttles are not all they're cracked up to be. Its nice and luxurious and looks cool, but in the end, it just became one more thing to fuss with every morning. And when I made the switch to boar brushes and became a face latherer, scuttles became a moot point.

I do keep an old coffee-cup in the sink that I use to soak my brush in, but I could get along without that if need be.

And the green VdH lather bowl that came with my VdH set? I use that to soak my dentures in.

Try repairing it with the kintsugi technique...I'd love to see what a scuttle would look like with those gold seams.

Scuttles are very nice if you want warm lather. They do the job quite well. I got a Becker that only cost me $23.00 and I use it once in awhile. Works great.

I don't intend to test this, but my DB 1.5 scuttle is built like a tank. I'm afraid if I dropped it, it would collapse my floor and wreck my house.

Sorry for your loss. I hook my thumb through the bottom of the handle of my Becker - but I do worry about dropping it. I use it every day and have had it for many months. I just returned from vacation and I missed it very much.

I found a $5 wooden miso soup bowl on Amazon.com. Lovely grain, and if it drops it's certainly replaceable. Having said that, a nice artistic bowl would be nice as well (Japanese ceramic miso soup bowl, perhaps).

I would opt for the plastic Marvy mug. Drop or throw it, or whatever you want. It's not likely to break. You can use it to put your soapy brush in, build lather in, and it had 3 bumps in the bottom- should you choose to slap a soap puck in there. The puck won't slide around. Best $10 I ever spent.

Get yourself a Becker, for $26 how could you go wrong.

Getting harder to obtain. Robert has always done it as a hobby and the demand has been outstripping his love for the hobby.
Last I heard he is not currently accepting new orders until the backlog is cleared.
I would expect his scuttles will likely go the way of Tony Miller strops... orders accepted for only a short time until he is ready to set up for a new run.

Ooh ... bummer about the G20. I have been looking at scuttles since I got into the whole scene, but I know me. I'll buy a killer scuttle for top dollar and I will inevitably lose it in a brain-fart/ gravity storm. So I'll probably stick with my $5.00 Whataburger Nickle Coffee mug setting in my 2nd sink like a makeshift brush scuttle. I primarily face lather anyway, so I guess I can save the heartache of a broken piece of expensive pottery.

Cheers to you nonetheless.

I just placed an order for 2 of them last week. Robert quoted me 3 weeks turnaround. We'll see, keeping them crossed.
