What's new

My continuing Straight Shaving Journey.

Le Grelot Royal Canada - re-honed all the way through, 20 suede, 60 cordovan
Arko - mug lathered
Whipped Dog Silvertip
CWS
Floid Blue

My regular 3 pass shave, N-S Ear-Mouth N-S then S-N - a few touchups.. comfortable, but just DFS - still nothing like
as close as I did my last few.. Sigh... I took this one back to the hones and beat the crap out of it and either:

1) the heel isn't sharp or
2) with this longer thin blade my hands just dont hold it right, and my thumb gets in the way..

I seriously wave the heel over chest hairs and they fall off.. I think it's 2)

shave was very comfortable and edge is smooth, just pieces just aren't close. Meh.. I am resolving to not
let it bother me or be overanalytical (says the engineer... as the aspergers kicks in....)

The Tough get Filis :)

Fili 13 - 20 suede 60 cordovan, K3
Proraso Green, Face lathered
Whipped Dog Silvertip
CWS
Floid Blue

Well, after my substandard evening shave, there was this morning's quick fix.. Grabbed my favorite Fili, and one pass, ATG, S-N, on the proraso.. Cleaned up everything that didn't work with the Le Grelot and I'm nice and smooth.

Gold Dollar 66 - freshly honed by me, 20 suede, 60 cordovan, Kanayama #3
Arko - Stick on face and then face lathered.
Muhle Synthetic
CWS
Nivea ASB

So, Picked up a gold dollar I recently honed, all is well with this, it shaved well and comfortably. I did a little experiment today because I had never used a shave stick "stick style" before. I did the "rub the stick on the face, then face lather with the brush" experiement. It did work, and I didn't mind it much, but I can't say the stick is any more "convenient" than just loading a brush on soap and then face lathering... Meh.. anyway, 3 passes and a Nice DFS, but no BBS today. not quite
smooth in a couple spots.

Ludo Red Imp 5/8 - 20 Suede, 60 Cordovan, K3
Proraso Green, Face Lathered
Muhle Synthetic
CWS
Floid Blue AS
Nivea ASB

N-S, and S-N with some touchups.. Fantastic 2 pass shave.. This Red imp is almost "mini fili" in how nice it shaves.. I would like it to be a bit heftier, (but hey, it is a small razor) but it's still very nice. Maybe it'll be my backpacking razor this summer..

I probably need to have a different aftershave intervention.. It's just so easy to grab the Floid Blue because I like it so much.. Maybe I need to hide the bottle and put the clubman there for a while.

Nope.. and I've mostly been resisting to keep the AD's in check. I've kept myself to three (Old Spice, Clubman and Floid Blue) with Nivea ASB..

I have a huge list of stuff to try (Captain's Choice, Razorock, etc.) if I let the AD's get the best of me on Italian Barber some evening.. I'll add that one to the list :)

lol I'm a fan of it, nice powdery barbershopy sort of scent.

Wade and Butcher Wedge - 20 passes Suede, 60 Cordovan, Kanayama #3
Mitchells Wool Fat, Mug lathered
Whipped Dog Silvertip
CWS
Floid Blue AS

So My favorite shaves really are my big full hollows, and my wedges.. it seems I like extremes. I like pulling out this as much as I like pulling out a Fili
$tmp_20291-IMG_20150329_145801-359029966.jpg

I have another wade as well, and a John Heifflor, but I did this one again for a second shave since I had it on the hone, and yes indeed I managed this one very well. I also have a few more i'm working on cleaning up, and perhaps I'll
send pics to Doc and let him do one.

I did the Fat after a soak in my big starbucks mug in the sink of hot water.. I must admit warm fat is pretty nice.

3 passes, N-S nose to ear then S-N, a little touchup on the right for being sloppy at the end, but result is a nice BBS, with the pleasant Floid blue feeling after ;)

Could tell immediately by the shape (and sheen of that Sheffield steel) that's a W&B. It almost has a silvery look to it, right? I've gone too long without shaving with mine, too. Maybe tomorrow I'll have a grab of it.

Le Grelot (Fleurs) "Royal Canada" - about 5/8 left, had a rough life before, Honed, AGAIN, then 40 suede, 80 Cordovan, K3
MWF - mug lathered
Muhle Synthetic
CWS
Clubman AS
Nivea ASB

So, the last two times I tried this razor, It didn't do well, or rather, I should say "I didn't do well" - I could swear it was sharp, but obviously from the start of the shave the whole blade was not. I have to go to the Cali. office next week and wanted to take this along to live there for me, but I couldn't get it sharp.. Third time is a charm, after just giving up and going completely back to bevel-set for the third time -- I had taken this thing and flattened it on my DMT because it had a frown but the heel still gave me trouble.. the blade has a lot of it gone, this is far from a pristine razor, and I couldn't get the back of the thing sharp... repeatedly.

Hmm.. steel hard as heck.. pain to set the bevel... shoulder gets in the way.. I know what that sounds like!!!!!!! Review Buca's video of his heel first aggression on a Gold Dollar!! Out to the hones.. OK mister hard french steel that takes a bad edge and holds it forever, I'm gonna kill you or cure you.. A few "adjustments" on the DMT 325 make me feel a little bit of pity for it, but not much.. Then some aggressive heel first bevel setting on the dmt 1200, followed by a progression of 15 ->5->3-> 1um papered film.. CROX and FEOX.. in the end, well, feels fantasticly sharp but only a shave will tell...

So, this afternoon out it came, MWF on the face with my Muhle travel brush.. It's a bit stiffer than my silvertip which while it doesn't feel quite as nice on my face makes lathering the fat a bit easier.. N-S, S-N, N-S, S-N on neck, N-S, E-W. W-E and S-N on the top, the full meal deal, Shave was very smooth, no tugging and it just zipped through the problem areas. and I'm BBS throughout.. I got some AS burn from the clubman to remind me that sometimes I chase BBS a bit hard, but all in all a fantastic BBS shave, comparable I believe to some of the best I've had, from a razor I was ready to give up on. So I seem to have finally brought this one back to life..

Having now dealt with American, Canadian, Sheffield, Solingen, Ningbo, and French Steel, I think I'm ranking them in that order of toughness.. if this razor holds this edge as well as it fought getting it it should stay sharp for a very long time.

It will now make the trip to California with me next week for a week of shaves, and live a dignified life in the Bay area when I'm not around...

So I was travelling last week and spent a week with the Le Grelot.

Le Grelot Royal Canada, well worn, now the "California Office Razor" - 60 passes whipped dog poor man.
Cella - Face lathered
Muhle Synthetic
not-very CWS
Floid Blue AS
Nivea ASB

Chased BBS the first morning, and got it, but some face irritation on the right, Razor didn't do so well for this, but possibly a lather and out of my element thing. 2 passes rest of the week and very acceptable. Just DFS, but pleasant..

Still not the biggest fan of how this razor "feels" - just not my things

It's looking like I'll have some downtime coming up, some of which I plan to use working on some edges on a couple blades. I hope I can pick up on the honing as well as some of you here have.
