MWF Closing?

Looking back, it now occurs to me that removing tallow from the shaving soap could have been a necessary cost saving measure, and that MWF might have been struggling for some time. The trouble they then put themselves in by sending Kent a large batch of mislabelled soap (non-tallow soap with the old tallow labels), which was unlawful for Kent to sell, couldn’t have helped. Or it could even have been this second issue alone that led to losses MWF couldn’t bear - compensating Kent and/or losing their main customer.

All speculation, of course, and we might never know.

I actually don't think the reformulation had anything to do with Mitchell's themselves. With a very well established business with many well established SKUs, the very scant workforce facilitates the orders from supplier to the numerous producers of their products. It's just orders in products out ... and Mitchell's themselves are barely involved.

Formulations change and that will no doubt have happened countless times across their ranges, given how the cosmetics industry changes so frequently. They will have been informed about the shaving soap change. Doubt it registered more than a mere, meh! The SKU is still the same - it's shaving soap. What more do you need to know?

I think we're reading WAY too much into it.

Agree. When Valobra shut down, Czech and Speake changed formula to non tallow, but they continued to use the tallow labels. This is illegal in the EU I believe, but to people that don’t use their own products, it’s just shaving soap. Poor Phil at Bullgoose got in a batch of this mis-labeled soap and had to return it, he couldn’t honestly sell a mis-labeled product - not to mention that the new formula simply doesn’t lather. But to C&S, there was obviously no difference.

It’s the end of the… shaving community as we know it. MWF is going out of business! What a tragedy… we should all just go back to plastic cartridges and aerosol shaving foam. What a joke! Why do we even give a darn?

Because this is another ancient soap company closing down. much like Williams, they have been around forever and to see them close down is a tragedy weather we like the soap or not they have been a huge part of the history of Wet Shaving and products used by multiple generations.

I got this response via email, direct from MWF when I asked if they are still open for business:

"Hello Bruce

I’m afraid we are now closed, however there is still some stock out there, which I’m sure a quick internet search will uncover.

Thanks

MWFS Team"

I’ve never used MWF but grabbed one of the $8 Kent pucks from Amazon recently after seeing so many positive comments about it. I’ve used it three times and like it a lot.

That's not a bad soap at all. For $8 I consider it a steal. Between it and the tallow Kent pucks I have I'm pretty set.
Agreed, it’s a very good soap. I never tried the tallow MWF because I read so much about how hard it was to lather and I just wasn’t interested in it. I’m really happy to add Kent to the rotation and your endorsement of it was a big reason I bought some.

I didn't understand and am unclear about the meaning of the email you received if it is just a confirmation from them that they are permanently closed with the business.
