Mendel's Fountain Pens

Nice little collection you have going there Mendel! Which direction are you thinking of going when purchasing your "last" two -- nicer (more expensive), with a gold nib perhaps? Larger, smaller?

Do consider vintage as well.

The following pens are under consideration: Twsbi 700 vac ( sorry brianw), Pelikan 200 Demonstrator , Monteverde Invincia Carbon with Rose Gold Accents, Conklin Mark Twain.

Many moons ago all printers (Epson, IBM,etc) always stated "Emulates HP"... I always would say, " If they all want to emulate HP, why just not spend a bit more and buy a HP".

Now this is just my PERSONAL OPINION.

I find the TWSBI's design uninspiring, The pen feels as cheap as a preppie, and the piston is stiff. The filling system is a Pelikan wannabee and will never get there. You want a Piston...spend a little bit more and get a Pel.

I was offered a 540 for 25.00 at a pen show by Speedy. At that time I showed him a Wearever and a Estie. I paid about that for those 2 pens and I would sooner have those 2 then 50 of his.

I know alot of youse guys love the TWSBI, and the Lamys. You have found a pen that trips your trigger !!!

I say great. I just tend to think that there are better pens out there for the same or less of the price.

Considered you bought your FP on Oct 13, you are quite bitten by this AD (believe me, I am too).

Once again, like traditional wet shaving, it's the return to a forgotten era. I value the past, simpler times, etc. Fountain pens and double edge razors - life is good!

O great Enabler! Which pens would those be?

For a Traditional Piston fill... Pels are the best.

The Micarta is a converter fill for 100. Get a FC 27 or 29. Brass Bodied Pens It's something substantial !!!

Better yet, get some of the Esties, or any of the numerous vintage pens floating around out there. The old lever fills may require a new sac. but these pens will still be being used when the Twisbi's of the world have turned to dust.

So, between my Twsbi, Noodler's, Pelikan , and two Lamy's are you only endorsing my Pelikan?

I haven't used a TWSBI pen, but I never understood all the Lamy hype. The Safari is most folks' de facto recommendation for those seeking their first pen, and I just don't get it. I know all this is personal, so YMMV. I find the design awkward looking, particularly the grip section, and their nibs are nowhere near as nice as a Kaweco Sport's. For similar money, one can get a NOS Waterman Laureat that is an outstanding writer. Ohto, Platinum, Pelikan, Pilot, Sailor, Staedtler, Sheaffer, and Parker all make nice pens that cost less than the Safari and write just as well if not better. Sometimes, it's possible to buy 2 or 3 such pens for the cost of a Safari. Those are purely my thoughts, so I hope no one feels I'm waging war on the Safari. Tons of people love 'em, and that's saying something.

I'd say that if a Pelikan is in the running for the OP's next pen, definitely go for that. They're great pens, and I can't say enough good things about my M215.

I need to calm down after the Giants - Cowboys game and that heart stopping win, so I think I am going to check out some of those pens Andy recommends.

What a game, wasn't it! On the edge of my seat until the last second, just like last week

What is the consensus on the Monteverde Invincia & Invincia Deluxe? I am liking the look of the carbon fiber with the Rose Gold.

I didn't buy it yet...it's on my wish list:

I see nothing wrong with the rule of sevens. In fact, I think it's a great system!

I root for two teams every week- the Steelers and the team playing the Cowgirls.

Really love the green ink in the Pelikan!
It's a great pen also. You may love the larger sizes.

I also love the TWSBIs.
Great value for money, and definitely some of my daily drivers.

Can I suggest a VAC700 for a next pen?
A perfect filling system at an affordable price.
