What's new

losing out on ebay auctions

Ok, just wanted to make sure. Go to your list of items that you are watching, and under the heading marked "Actions", you will see a Hyperlink that says "Bid Now" next to that, there is a little down arrow, also a hyperlink. If you click on that, you can set up an SMS alert to text you when a watched item is ending soon.

I have never used this service, but I just thought of something, when you get an SMS saying you've been outbid, can you just text back a higher bid, or do you have to use the web browser on your phone, and then place and confirm your bid like when you are online?

Phil

I don't worry about being outbid, only when the auction is about to end. You can chose one and/or the other to alert your cell phone. You do use your web browser on your phone. I just place my high bid during the last minute. And yes, you bid and confirm just like from a computer. I do agree with your theory in principle. For a good example of what you've been referring to , see this.

I also paid too much (maybe way too much?) for one too. But I had decided I really wanted it, and bid what I felt it was worth to me. The Silver New Standard from a couple days ago should be here soon. Hoping it cleans up really well (Guido's silver cleaning method will be employed).

Was that the one from the 13th that went for $67.00? I was tracking that one as well. Can't remember but I think I got caught up doing something and missed it. That's why I don't use sniping software, keeps me from going broke and having to explain more razors to anybody.

If that is the one, I don't think you overpaid, although a blade box would have been nice for a complete set. I'm no expert though.

That is the one. Wasn't sure how the price would be viewed here, as I am new enough not to have a great idea what they go for. I just knew I really liked what I saw and decided I wanted that one. Normally, I'm a bit more of a bargain hunter. My top bid was a bit more, but not a lot more.

That's rough. Was that you? On another note, how do you make the word "this" jump to a url like that? Do you have to type all the html code, or is there a shortcut?

Not to change the subject too much, but see the picture attached. This gold New Standard is being described as "mint". That's pretty ballsy, I mean I could understand using the term "minty", but coming right out and claiming full on mint? That dude has some huevos!

Mint? Cracks and all? I wouldn't pay attention to a rating like that on eBay. One thing here on B&B where we've got written standards for rating (a great thing, reminds me of some of the watch sites I frequent). But on eBay, a comment like that combined with this pic really shows a grain (or two) of salt is indicated.

BTW, since he didn't respond to your link question yet (maybe he went to sleep like I should have...), here's how it's done.

Go to the page you want to link (I usually open it in another tab). Highlight and copy the address from the browser bar.

Now in the post you've typed, highlight the word you want the link to be in (don't click copy, just highlight it and leave it blue). Then click on the link icon above the reply box (chain link at the bottom of a globe). When the box pops up, paste in the address you copied from the browser address bar. :thumbup1:

ETA: Often the box will already have an http:/ or whatever in it. Erase that or the link won't work.

That's the same razor I have in Gold. If you like an aggressive shaver, this is it. I have used mine, and I love it. Paid $45 for mine, but it had a really bad case. I restored it though, and for my needs, it all came together pretty nice.

I use an onboard program for sniping called Bid-O-Matic. Throw the auction number and your price in there, forget about it.

I typically lose because I lowball everything. I place so many bids though, it's rare for me not to have something around the house to clean up.

I stick to cruddy looking stuff nobody wants, mistakes by the lister, that kind of thing. Occasionally I'll go for something cased or nice looking.

This Fat Boy is a good example of the stuff I go for (note the timing of my winning bid). I don't like the look of the handle on this one, why it's sticking out like that. But for the price, I'm willing to gamble. If there's any interest I'd be happy to document its rehab when it arrives.

I always set a price limit and place my bid, if i win, yipee, if not i think, well its more than i wanted to pay, though sinse last saturday i lost 3 items by 10p which is a bit annoying

I agree with the "bid high and early". I have other things to do than sit and watch the last minutes of an auction. If the highest I am willing to pay for an item is fifty bucks, I bid fifty bucks then forget about it. If I get beat, well someone else was willing to pay more than me, that's all. I wait for the next one...there will always be another. Once I broke my rule and tried to get a fountain pen cheap, making incremental bids. The result, I got caught up in a last-minute bidding war and ended up paying two hundred bucks for a pen I could have bought retail for about one hundred! But I showed that @#$! who was bidding against me, didn't I? He is probably still laughing...

Well, I just want to say that there are times where I will bid early to get an item on my buy list. I often have hundreds of items in my watch list, but only a few on my bidding list. An early bid at what I think is a low price is like a marker for me. If I want to really be competitive, I will then place a "fair" bid at the end of the auction to avoid getting in a bidding war. Once in a great while I will forget to come back at the end of an auction and I have gotten the item for a low ball price. More often my early bid was blown away by the final price.

I don't see what the downside is to placing one early bid, but I do see the downside to starting a bidding war early. It is meaningless to be the top bidder on day 3 or 4, it is only the winner at the end of the auction who gets the item!

I do the same thing, place a very lowball bid at the very beginning and then not bid again until the very end. That keeps it in my radar.

But by placing the high bid early, that price gets incrementally driven up by all the little bids coming after it. If that high bidder had waited, he would have gotten it for less!

Very true. But at least that high bidder ends up winning because of his ridiculous bid, and doesn't harm anyone else. It's these people placing little bids with a lot of time left until they just don't wanna place another little bid that leave the rest of the ebay world with a higher price tag that we have to pay.

And about that slim that went for so cheap, I think it serves the seller right. Maybe he'll learn to not mislabel his products anymore
If you're interested, I bet you could contact him and work something out (no I am not he)

the worst is when something goes for far less than you would have paid for it, but you didnt bid because you thought it would go way higher than it did

+1 This has happened to me several times...I might look into using a esnip type of service.

oof, let another get away today...even by using esnipe.com. the weird thing was the bid ended at my max bid but someone else won the item. i'm guessing they bid a higher amount and therefore won? my username didn't even show up after the bidding was done.

Or bid the same max just a second before yours. I don't think even sniping software can be perfect all the time.
