Laptop build quality

Bought the T410s and it's excellent. Got it all speced out with the high res screen, i5, SSD hardrive, mobile broadband, etc... It's quite impressive.

I think you will be really happy with the IBM/Lenovo. I had one (forget which model) through college, and it was a tank. I've had some minor issues. After about 4 years, the fan gave out. It was a little expensive to replace since the heatsink is built into the fan. I've also upgraded the memory.

In my experience, the Lenovo laptops will last as long as you take care of them. I was at school with thousands of kids with varying models of the IBM. Mine has lasted 6 years. Some people got 2. Others had to replace mother boards, screens, hard drives etc. My brother had one for about 3 years. Lets just say they aren't exactly fire proof...

I pretty much run only Mac/OSX now because that is where I do 99% of my job. Luck for me, because anyone who gets issued a company laptop gets one of those horrid Dells from a few years back. If I were to buy another Windows machine, it wold be a Lenovo.

I was just looking at that same model for my wife even though I hate PC because all of the evil ways they crashed on me at the most inopportune times. I ended up tearing her Toshiba apart and upgrading the RAM, only notebook I've ever worked on where the RAM was under the keyboard.
Well you've made a good choice. Enjoy.

I had a Thinkpad from 2001-2005 and it was bullet proof. It took a 3" chunk of wood out of a door frame and didn't skip a beat.

Great choice. I personnally went with an ASUS, I got decent (2nd best) res screen measuring 15.4" in wide format, and pretty decent specs for 1k euros. I went with the asus because they are a bit cheaper then the thinkpads.

One thing I found out about ASUS after I bought this laptop, is that they actually build everything except for drives and speakers, from parts unlike companies like DELL that just slap together parts from the cheapest manufactorer. I think its great.

Well enough about my etch a sketch, I hope you enjoy your thinkpad, I was looking at those but I took the other road and its been smooth sailing for about 1.5 years now.

One more PC tech weighing in can't hurt. For reference, I work at an Institute occupied by 3,000+ employees and contractors. We're about 70% PC, ad 30% Mac. Actually, carve out <1% for some Solaris and Centos machines.

Of the PC's we have, the vast majority are Dell, Latitude laptops and Optiplex desktops. We have surprisingly few hardware failures lately, save for the few old 260's, 270's, and 280's that are still floating around (they're all bound to die at some point due to the known issue with faulty capacitors near the CPU socket on the motherboard). The few rebels that won't go with the flow generally buy Lenovo or Sony. It's not a joke, exaggeration, or bias: I spend more time on the phone with Lenovo + Sony than I do w/Dell. Actually, I spend more time calling the Apple hardware tech out than I do the Dell tech. Part of that is due to the fact that folks keep their Apples far longer, but it's worth mentioning.

My vote for people who need a laptop and, honestly, will put it through the paces, buy a Latitude. It's the safe bet in PC's as far as I see. That said, I'm an Apple man and likely always will be. They're not without their faults, but overall: better hardware, better software, better support.

See, it's funny that YMMV applies here, too.

Some guys love IBM ThinkPads (or "stinkpads" as I affectionately call them). I daily have to restrain myself from using mine as a discus. Work provides them and I've had three in my five years here, all P.O.S.'s.

However, HP's have been great from me.

My recommendation would be to jump on one of the up-and-comers. I just bought an Acer for my fiancé a few months ago and though she uses it lightly, when I get on it's a workhorse and I couldn't be happier.

Good luck!

EDIT: and I JUST saw your post where you bought a ThinkPad. I just found out at work that they're switching the entire consulting practice (1000+ employees) to Dell laptops. I can't win!

Hardly an up and comer since they have been building notebooks since the mid 90's. They used desktop processors which ran hot due to confined space. Have they switched to mobile processors?
