Kindle help!

I have the Kindle Paperwhite, no ad version, wireless, but no 3G.
It's one of the best investments in electronics I've ever made.
You can download Calibri and convert various e-book formats to Kindle format very easily. This is handy because you can go to free book sites like Project Gutenberg, download an unbelievable quantity of classics and format them to be read on the Paperwhite.
I agree with others who have said that the lighting screen on the Paperwhite kicked it to the next level in the e-book readers, as it is NOT backlit, it's front lit just like a small lamp on a book would be.

I depend on my Kindle Fire HD. Santa is giving me the HDX for Christmas. I had the Kindle Fire before those, and the Kindle 3 before that. I loved them all. I would get her a tablet.

I am looking for advise on a kindle or similar. I want to get my daughter one for X-mas and I have zero exposure to them.
I have heard so many conflicting arguments about what to get from different friends so I thought I would lean on B&B. I do not really want to get her a tablet, just a reader.

Thanks for any suggestions or info you can provide!

As luvmysuper says, once you get calibre or some other conversion software, you'll have less trouble with different formats.

The kindle has one huge downside, and I'm shocked that Amazon hasn't fixed it. You can't sort anything. You might not are about sorting if you only have 3 books, but I have over 500 short stories on mine, and it's a mess. Calibre has support for collections--folders--but the kindle doesn't. I can manage one or two changes, but much more than that and I have to delete everything from the kindle and reinstall it from calibre. This puts everything under a collection using the author's name, or whatever. I have 7 pages of these collections. But... BUT... BUT... the kindle only sorts by most recently accessed no matter what the buttons say. Sure, you can sort by collection name, which for me is author, but once you look inside a collection, it moves to the top regardless of which sort option you use, and it stays there. Lame! I can only hope the newer versions fix this.

I've never noticed the sort problem, but I only have 2 pages of collections (by author);I usually only keep about 30 books on my Kindle, and transfer back and forth to Calibre on my computer once a month or as needed. I have about 300 books in my Calibre library on my computer and highly recommend anyone with a Kindle to check out this free software.

Edit: Calibre is not needed what so ever to use and enjoy the Kindle, and I would advise new users to stick with buying from Amazon or borrowing from your library, when getting books for your Kindle; It is stupid easy!:biggrin1:

I've never had sort issues, either. Sometime around 2010 I quit looking through lists of items. I use search for everything - comptuer, Kindle, laptop, phone... Lists are so 2000s:lol:

Looks like I have a second child requesting Santa brings him one as well. : ) Looks like I am getting a Paperwhite and a Fire. The not so responsible child will have the less "gamey" unit. :001_rolle Scratch that off the list, now we are moving on to bowling ball&bag and Compound bows. :scared:

We have a paperwhite and a Fire HD. The Fire is much easier to use and find books, the search feature on the Paperwhite is slow and iffy.

The paperwhite is easier to read in dim light or outdoors in bright lighting. My Paperwhite is the 3g which I like, I can find a book on my iPhone, buy then download to the paperwhite where I do not have internet or wi fi connections. Battery life is much, much better on the Paperwhite.

It's all a trade off, you need to decide which features you like and need best.

I would like to see a 3 or 4g Paperwhite, with the processer of a Fire HD, at least the speed and ease of searching for a book.

I was looking at my Kindle about to select a book last night when I noticed "Recent" near the upper right corner with a little black arrow beside it. I touched "recent" and it was the sort order with three options - Title, Author, and Recent". I checked in my collections and it was there, too.

I have the first edition paper-white with the latest software version.
