Is it swell time?

A howling great shave John!

I really don’t have an explanation for this difference.
I was pondering about your 6 versus 7 days versus 8 days of growth. What I can imagine happening is that even with a day’s difference the whiskers are softer on the larger number of days. With a fresh blade and an open comb razor larger and softer hairs are easier to cut compared to shorter and more tenacious stubble.

At least what I found when I did the occasional wet shave under the shower during my 20+ year electrical shaver streak is that I got close shave with more days of growth compared to every day shaving. I think there is less resistance from longer stubble.

I do think there is a tipping point at x number of days where longer whiskers actually clog the razor or hamper the razor from curing effectively. That number is obviously different for everybody.

That’s what came to mind anyway. I could be talking gibberish of course.

Agreed Guido. I’ve always found that whisker length has a sweet spot for different shave method’s. For instance my electric shaves were best in the three to five day window for good shaves.
With a fresh blade and an open comb razor larger and softer hairs are easier to cut compared to shorter and more tenacious stubble.
Absolutely. A longer whisker will also make a larger amount of hydration possible, adding to softening the hair. Softer whiskers present less cutting resistance to the blade.

Agreed Guido. There is a sweet spot and as you’ve stated this is different for each of us.

Also found this to be true. The Grande will clog at nine day whiskers and the Lupo at an eleven day growth. As with all processes when you get close to either operational extreme, efficiency begins to fail, or collapse. The longer day growths were challenging and poorer shaves.

Last Monday was my turn for an ambulance run. Bea and I now qualify for ambulance reward miles. Can’t praise our first responders enough. They are kind caring professionals and we are so lucky to have them. I had severe chest pain and passed out because of the extreme pain. Everybody was worried that it was heart related. At the hospital they gave me “The Pink Lady”. The cocktail freezes everything from the oesophagus down. A chest x ray and ultra scan showed gall stones. I had to stay overnight because I was still weak and shaky. I’m waiting on a surgeons referral. The prognosis is to have the bugger removed. Usually severe attacks will follow and infection is a large risk requiring emergency surgery. Hopefully the surgery can be done laparoscopic. They yank it out through your belly button.

Feeling better now and enjoying some of the last heirloom tomatoes of the season. I had an arugula tomato red onion salad today. I would put on par with a great Caesar with our local romaine now finished for the season. Fall meals start to lean towards soups and stews. We will fantasize about another growing season with fresh greens and garden salads. We were lucky enough to enjoy fresh tomato pastas a few times. We froze some pasta sauce and two batches of piquant killer chilli sauce for morning poached eggs, yummy.

I’m always glad to shave at my seven day interval. My closest shaves and highest skin comfort in this window. Although a well established shave. Refinement is still sought. Striving for perfection.

Happy Shaves

Thank You Gentlemen for your kind wishes and prayers. I’m not expecting a call for a bit as elective surgery is usually months away. I’ll be surprised if I get an appointment in under three months. Two hernias, two knee replacements, green laser prostrate surgery, two cataracts, a triple bypass and a pig valve thrown in for good measure. My dance card is definitely getting filled. I am making a good effort to cut back on the fat. I need to lose weight and the gallbladder is making sure that I do. I am feeling much better.

Do you shave for time, or do you shave for comfort? A gentleman’s shave is one of the best opportunities to pamper ourselves. Enjoying the moment and treating ourselves to a luxurious experience. Back in the day when I had a hectic schedule. I never compromised on a long enjoyable shower or luxurious shave. If there was a time restraint I would forgo them until I had the time to enjoy them. No regrets. You develop a mind set and you develop habits that are conducive to your joy and pleasure. Accepting pleasure over time even made my poorer shaves considerably more bearable. They were the best luxury I could muster. Until I learned how to shave in my seventies. Never too late to learn and improve.

Sundays late night shave slipped over the midnight hour and finished up in Monday. My usual habit as I seldom sleep before 2:00 am. A lifetime of practicing long showers and pampering shaves continues to bring satisfaction and enjoyment into my grooming.

I continue the ATG single pass for my face shave with clean-ups and a wee bit of buffing. My head shave is back to a two pass shave. The desired closeness needs the extra pass. The luxury of extra lathering never a hard sell. My weekly face and head shave is looked forward to with anticipation. I always feel like a million bucks. Happy to start the week smooth and close shaven.

We have just finished our Thanksgiving Holiday weekend. Although I could’ve shaved on day seven or eight. I decided on the nine day because I had to renew my Health card and Drivers licence. They take an ID photo and I had a nice very close shaved skull and mug for the shot. A morning shave very unusual for me. ATG Single Pass for face and an ATG Double Pass for the scalp. An excellent shave with great skin comfort. Even though all components are locked in and remain the same. I continue to be able to lighten my strokes and clean up buffing. I thoroughly enjoy the kit. There are many benefits with minimalism. I do have a new shaving accruement in the mail which I deliberated on for quite awhile. I finally pulled the trigger, anxiously awaiting delivery. Of course I will do a full review. I didn’t like the price so I’ll be marking it hard on its first debut.

A busy week sold my twenty-eight inch Honda track snowblower because it was too heavy for me to manage. Even while moving they require a good amount of strength to turn when needed. I purchased a twenty-four inch Ego electric snowblower as a replacement. It has wheels which have steering assist and hand warmers on the grips. A good amount of the machine is plastic like the battery case etc. It is lighter and much more maneuverable. Bea can even run it. She wasn’t strong enough to run the Honda. We had the Honda for thirty years no complaints on reliability or performance. It was still in excellent condition and the purchaser was very happy to get it. Good used Honda’s are very scarce.

We harvested the last of our tomatoes just before our first frost. We got two very large bowls. Bea made green tomato mincemeat preserves which is fabulous on toast. Also a big hit in the tart department. I peeled all the apples I love to assist in the canning process. I’m extremely fortunate to have a very talented wife who is very good at canning and preserves. Both of us were raised by mothers who canned everything for the winter months. We were both from families of seven, lots of mouth to feed over the long cold winter months.

IMG_0799.jpeg

This weeks seven day shave was excellent. ATG Single Pass face and head. I am not sure as to why I didn’t need two passes on the head shave which has been my normal the last couple of months. I think it all comes down to a lighter touch because my strokes seem to be the same. A lighter touch will shave closer. I’ll see if I can repeat that next week which most likely will be a six day shave.

My prayers and heartfelt wishes to the many storm survivors. Unimaginable to me. We do get the odd nasty winter blizzard every half dozen or so years. There is never the devastation and destruction that those summer storms bring. I hope the remaining season doesn’t wreak any more havoc. So many wonderful stories of concerned and helpful people assisting those in need. God Bless Them All.

I haven’t done a review in awhile. I had been deliberating over this purchase for quite a few months. I finally pulled the trigger at the top of the month. The Barber Mask.

The reason I took so long to decide was the price. The Canadian Quebec location where they originate from lists it for $29.00. That doesn’t sound to bad. What they fail to show on the web site is it’s $29.00 USD. This does come to light when you go to finalize the purchase. So to cut to the chase. To the $29.00 USD they then add $7.00 USD shipping and handling. Then they add $4.68 USD sales tax. (I have never paid sales tax, shipping and handling in USD funds purchasing a Canadian item in Canada.) So this was a first for me. So the total now is $40.68 USD. Paying with PayPal the $40.68 now gets converted to Canadian dollars on my credit card $57.38 CND. Do I think $57.38 is too much money for this item. Absolutely. My problem is that I am a hot towel freak.

Using a regular hot towel and trying to hold it and make good contact with the moustache and neck area below the chin can only be accomplished in a lying prone position. I could never get the heat on my neck and moustache area to my liking and it was uncomfortable to try to do it as well as tiring. Does this towel with the garter straps accomplish this to my satisfaction. Absolutely.

I always have a long hot shower and carefully exfoliate my head and face whiskers with a wash towel and my shower soap. Once this was done I crawled into the Barber Mask and then completed the balance of my shower. I was able to add more hot water to the mask with my hand held massage sprayer. It was above average in comfort and added to an extremely relaxing shower. After the shower I massage Shea Butter into my face and head skin for pre shave. I always let the butter soak into my skin for ten minutes. I massage a good foot ointment into my feet during these ten minutes.

Every now and again we all experience an exceptional shave. It could be moon position, it could be frame of mind, it could be a deeper relaxation. Whatever the reason this was one of those shaves. Extremely close. Accompanied with super ultra skin comfort. Was it the Barber Mask enhancing a very relaxing shower. I do not know. Face and head glorious in the best skin comfort I’ve experienced. Will I be able to replicate this shave in seven days? I sure hope so. Would I recommend the Barber Mask? On price definitely no. On performance definitely yes. I also thought I overpaid for my razor shave handle until I used it a few times. Some things are overpriced but you love em anyways. Time and use will tell with the mask. After all it’s just a towel.

That’s whatI tell myself at least John!

Interesting product. I might have to check that out although I am not much of a hot or warm shaver type of guy. I do like the complete package this hobby brings.
Always searching for improvement in comfort. I cold water shaved for probably a year or so. At that time I was still doing three passes face and head. I found it quite interesting that by time I got to lathering my head that there was a noticeable increase in lather temperature. I had also used a shave scuttle for a few years when I was still cart shaving. The warm lather was very nice. As you’ve said Guido. Many different options and alternatives to explore.

An update on the masks first use. After use and well wrung out. The drying time hanging on a towel bar in the bathroom is three days for a complete dry. Not an issue for me as a weekly shaver. I do like to use my boar brush completely dried out and groomed to make sure it’s fluffy and hairs soft and separated. I also like to use dry fluffy towels at the beginning of each shave. Looking forward to the second use of the shave mask and will update any differences.
