JNAT Hardness and Difficulty Getting An Edge

I really purchased a softer kiita tomo nagura for my maruichi asagi. It works way better than my ozuku tomo nagura. You may want to seek a kiita stone.

I just went ahead and ordered a Kiita nagura from aframes...we'll see how that works...thx for the tip!!

Thats where I got mine, hopefully yours is as effective! Ive purchased two stones from him, one being my very rare Maruichi asagi with nihonkamisori stamp.

yeah he's great to do business with...I've gotten a bunch of stuff from him over the last year (including my kanayama strop & several naguras)...

The one I ordered was a Nakayama Kiita Tomo...hopefully it'll work a litte better than the Ozuku Tomo I got from him, which is SO hard I could not raise a slurry with it...

Maybe I'll order one of these also since I'm having trouble raising slurry with my tomo on the Shoubudani. I realize it takes more work than raising slurry on a coticule but I rubbed it with a tomo for a good 3 to 4 minutes and barely got a slurry at all....

The Tomo that Maksim included with my Shoubu is also very hard. I found that cutting some grooves in it with a hacksaw helps (so does flattening it with a DMT), but you're right; it is hard to raise a slurry with the Shoubudani Tomo....

edit - sorry Shawn, I just saw your other thread where you said that you already cut grooves in it...Another technique I sometimes use is to lift one side of the tomo & rub it on one of the champfered edges...that may speed things up...

You need a softer but fine tomonagura.

The name of the mine that the Awase or the Tomo is from is fairly uninportant when trying to find a match.

A matching Tomo for a Shobu could easily come from Ohira - and not all Shobu Tomos will be similar.
