Is this an Old Type

Hi,

Can anyone confirm if this is an Old Type.
No patent number or Gillette logo
Blade box has Gillette on

Razor says Foreign only not sure if it's legitimate

The case is really nice I love it the design and pattern

I did follow a post for these old type and cases but must not have followed the post

It looks like an old knock-off.

If it was a genuine Gillette Old Type, it would have the Gillette diamond logo on the underside of the base plate. It's a copy.

The bulldog might be a Gillette...I can't read it, but it looks like there is a serial number on top of the base plate, which may mean it is authentic.

I called it a "bulldog" though it may be more correctly a "Big Fellow". Does it have any marking on the underside of the base plate?...a logo or other marking?

You can go to mr-razor and scroll through the pictures. The Big Fellow pictured there has a Gillette logo stamped on the underside of the base plate...I don't see that on yours.

I just thought the same there is no stamp Gillette underneath possibly a clone then not doing to good here

I'm not 100% sure. The base plate looks much thinner on your razor compared to a Big Fellow, and lacking the Gillette logo, it may also be a copy with a serial number on top.

Maybe someone smarter than me will know for certain.

Still, they are all vintage razors, and I see no reason not to use and enjoy them.

Thank you I believe the same when looking at Mr Razor. Plus the top plate is not rounded like mine is. Then no logo on the base plate. I got two other nice razors included. These two are the clones for sure I wonder if the whole parts of the razors are clones or just the heads.

For sure I am keeping them and shaving with them thanks. Got 4 razors very cheaply so not bothered nice to own them all.

It should be said, although it's an Old Type clone and not an original, it could well be a good razor, maybe better than an original, and certainly better than an original in bad shape. The problem is if it was passed off as an original. Things like that bum me out.

Yes it's a shame that they are not original. I will try the razors and see how they are. I don't know if it was intentional sold as clones.

Not back then at least. It was just the model of razor then. And let’s not forget that Gillette acquired quite a number of companies (before being taken over by one of their competitors themselves) and merging the designs from those companies with their own.

So the case is legit possible the handle?

Take your case for example which is legit. That’s from the ABC - American Button Company. Those razors called Old Type Pocket Editions (there were several different ones with elaborately embossed handles) are like regular old types but without engraving and with a serial number. And as a side note, the handle you have doesn’t match the should-have-been-in-the-case-handle.

Those handles were also common among contemporary brands like Rotbart, Leresche, etcetera.

What might happen in modern days is that non-aficionados (i.e. the not so shave crazies like us) see the logo on the case and automatically assume the razor belongs to the case.

I have seen a Gillette Fatboy case with a Flare Tip in it being sold as an Adjustable (because the case says so).

All that said - they might shave really well and might be a fine addition to the rotation nonetheless!

Yes I will definitely try these razors just a shame they are not original. I am all about originality I like the very old razors only. It does not sit well with me. I am loyal to any manufacturer and never buy anything like this. Looking back I could have potentially spotted this.

The ball end handle on the clone old type is nice good weight to it. The other the same I like the patina on the clone Big Fellow.

I really like the case the detail is very nice. Would be very nice to find the original razor. I think that will be very hard.

Let's see I will have a shave with them and update.

B845271 is a 1911 old type from a standard set. They have no 'made in' or Gillette logos.

I am not sure but if you think so that would be nice. Wonder why mine says "Foreign" only the numbers from your attachment look nicer than mine is. Plus the head on mine looks not so great quality quite thin. Would be nice if this does turn to out okay my razor thanks
