Is Southern Comfort a Whiskey, Bourbon or a Liquor?

SOCO was popular in College and in HS when I was growing up but we moved up to Jim Beam, Jack Daniels and Crown Royal. I really liked Makers Mark for back porch sipping before I stopped drinking all together.

SOCO is intro College drink.
