What's new

is it worth buying the grab bag of random blades from Amazon?

as the title states, is it worth it on amazon or is there better deals on these try me sizes (3-5 blades a package) i am also a prime member so shipping is free.

To be honest I'm looking for the best blades for an Ikon shave craft short comb. a mercul 37C and hopefully either an Ikon B1 slant or X3 slant.

Too many of these samplers contain filler blades that you would probably not choose to use long-term. IMHO, you are better off to make up your own sampler using a company like razorbladesclub. If you pick out enough blades, you get a discount and low cost shipping. Select only brands of blades you think you might want to use long-term.

LOL that's where i'm at default. I really have only used astro blades and dont know much about other blades. im sure they probably have like a good, better, best package to choose from.

I would presume you have Astra Greens? Get an additional tuck of Astra Blue, Personna Platinum, either a fancy tuck of Feathers or Kai’s and perhaps a final tuck of Treet Platinum to start out.

Blade choices are tough. There are so many and some end up being the same, just branded differently.

I agree with using the RazorBladeClub and either getting his sample or making your own (you can buy individual blades and tucks of 5 or 10)

I chose blades based on my impressions of people’s likes on this forum, randomness and a decision to try Japanese, German and USA made blades.

My favorite in the Ikon X3 slant was the German Wilkinson Sword, but my trials were not exhaustive. I did not like the Kai blade for that razor (and in general), Feather was ok for me, too, but the Wilkinson was exceptional, as I recall.

My list (personal bias) includes: Wilkinson Sword, Timor, BIC Astor, Personna Med prep and Lab prep (can’t tell a difference) and Mühle (these weeemt great in the X3 either).

I have lots of others to try, because it is cheap fun. It seems there is a lot of love for Nacet and Tarara, so I have some to try. There are so many others. Seems like Gillette 7 o’clock comes up a lot here, Wizamet, but it is so much and so personal.

I bought a few sampler packs when I started wet shaving based on the generic advice given. I agree these packs are loaded with cheaper blades and are not a good value if one cares about using up every blade. I have a few too many tucks of Shark Stainless and Derby Extra that I periodically use and they aren't my favorites.

It is better to build your own sampler as @NorthernSoul suggests. Over time I found the various Gillette models fit my hair growth and are easy to find and economical.

Also @dmshaver runs the Blade Exchange
I agree on this, the GBE is wonderful, and @dmshaver is a great guy! If you order 100 blades or more on Razor Blades Club website, you get free shipping.

I don't know where you are on your journey with DE shaving, or how coarse your beard is, so recommendations can be tough. I have only been wet shaving for a couple of months. I have a medium beard and somewhat sensitive skin, so I have been looking for a combination of sharp and smooth with the least irritation. Here are my recommendations (so far), in no particular order:
Rapira Platinum Lux
Wilkinson Sword (Germany)
Gillette Platinum (Russia)
Gillette Permasharp
Astra SP (Russia)
Personna Lab Blue
Treet 7 Days Platinum
Personna Red (Germany)
Lord Cool
Gillette 7 O'Clock Blacks
Lord Silver Star

As everyone will tell you, blades are always YMMV. Good luck in your search, it's part of the fun with this hobby!

The short answer is, no, they are not worth it. Especially this one:

Your ten dollars is better spent on a Dispenser of Feathers, or a Dispenser of German Wilkinson Sword Classic and one of American Personna Comfort Coated.

I disagree. I've had great results with many of the blades in this assortment. There are also others I have not tried. I might just pick this up to try the other blades I am not familiar with.

Feathers are nice to me for two shaves then get bad really quick.

I have tested all of them, and I can tell you, they are not all bad, but most of them are filler, one is discontinued, and a bunch of them vary too much between batches to provide reliably the same experience stocking up as you got sampling them.

It is better to start with something that is consistent between batches and widely liked.

There are like two blades here worth trying early in your blade education, three more worth trying later in case you like them, and thirteen that are filler and only worth trying for entertainment purposes.

There is a subjective component to blades, but that doesn't mean it is a good idea to start out with thirteen poorly and inconsistently produced Samah and Sotraco blades. You should start with blades of good quality. Why choose an 18 blade sampler with thirteen blades made by two of the worst manufacturers?

Do anything Amazon, you can find samplers of blades at many place, like Ebay, or Razor Emporium.
I was looking through Amazon and didn't see any good samplers. Good ones probably don't sell as well as ones like the super popular RBC one.

The Razor Emporium Top Ten sample pack is pretty good. It has their overpriced private label Czech Blade and the RK Henson blade, but the only really important blade missing is Astra SP, and it does have Astra SS. I guess it should have Bic CP, too.
