What's new

I need a new smartphone....

I have lived in a country where many cellphone owners use pay-as-you-go services, and I must say, I will take the Verizon's service over that any day of the week. If you use your cell phone as often as most Americans do, pay-as-you-go is not the best financial decision.

To be fair, you can't buy a brand new iPhone for $49 overseas .....

That's true. And if you remain in the U.S. and are happy with ATT service and you know you will not change during the 2 year contract, then a new one bought here is a good deal. Maybe. But we should have a choice. We should be able to switch carriers for a better price, and we should be able to switch back. We should not be held hostage by a device that we own, paid for. I think the $49 is for the 16GB model, though. I believe the 32GB is $195 or something like that. $325 cancellation fee. Hmmm... well, still it will be a locked phone.

You are either a iPhone guy or an Android guy. Each has it's strong and weak points. It comes down to which you are happiest with. There is no right or wrong.

My best advice would be if you have friends that have the few specific models you are interested in to get your hands on them and try them. It would also matter where you live. I live in a more rural area where we won't see 4g service around us for a couple years yet so for me personally a 4g phone wouldn't make much difference. If you live in a larger city that has or will soon have 4g service that would be something to look at.

I personally have an iphone 3gs. I love everything about it except for the lack of flash support, but there are plenty of ways around that with other accelerators. It works well for what I need. There are tons of apps. I use many apps for work and I have found everything I have wanted. Battery life is also good. I personally have not had an adroid so I can't compare.

My partner at work has an HTC Evo and loves it also. She has not had an iphone so she can't compare either.

We use our phones about equally everyday at work and the iphone definately has better battery life.

It really just boils down to personal preference.

If you like to mod or hack your phone or just fool around with different OS's android is the way to go. However, if you like a smooth and seamless user interface definitely go for the iphone. I recommend the iphone.

My wife and I have Samsung Acclaims and when we're up for renewal we're going to ditch them for a regular phone. $150 per month is outrageous for phone service and I'm almost embarassed that we're paying that much. We can get the same plan minus the data package for either $80 or $90/month.

I don't use the internet on it enough to make a difference and the network here is too slow to be able to use Google maps or any sort of navigation on the phone. Plus the actualy "phone" part is a royal pain in the rump do use. We will be getting an unlimited text plan, though, as a slideout keyboard has turned me into a texting maniac!

First question to ask is what service provider gives you the best service where you will mainly be using the phone?

For me it's Verizon. Their coverage is solid, plus it works out in the boonies too, just as long as you are not WAY out in the boonies. (just so you know, I have a blackberry on AT&T for work that I bring everywhere, and I can say that for me, Verizon coverage is better).

Second question: do you LOVE Apple?

If yes, get the iPhone. If no, get the droid.

I have the droid (personal phone), and it works great. But I see people with iPhones and they love them dearly. The iPhone was not available on Verizon when I got my droid, so when my time is up, I may have to look at the iPhone. My droid was on a BOGO deal, and the first one was heavily discounted too. I have no regrets.

They have a pretty good deal. $60/mo no contract, unlimited talk, text, and web. Bring your own unlocked GSM phone and their SIM is $12.95. I just ordered one. I am currently paying $2/day for unlimited text and talk but no data, with ATT.

A regular size SIM can be cut down to fit in the iphone or ipad. You can do it manually like I do or you can get a cutter for about $7 from amazon dot com or other sources and it punches it out perfectly with one squeeze. To use a cut-down or micro sim in a regular phone you can get an adapter for about a buck. Better yet look for a package with the cutter and a couple of adapters.

One cool thing about Micro SIMs is you can get a dual SIM adapter that works in most phones that use full size SIMs. You stick two micro SIMs into the adapter and plug it into the phone just like a normal SIM, and you have one phone with two numbers active. This can be very cool when traveling.

I am staying with my iphone but I really am getting tired of ATT's relative lack of support for iphone. They don't like no-contract customers using unlocked iphones on their network I guess. I did try a T-Mobile SIM with prepaid data package and it worked fine in my unlocked iphone. I am pretty sure that the SimpleMobile SIM will work and give me data, too. I will be testing a Straight Talk SIM in the iphone in a few days though I am told that it isn't supposed to work.

A Locked iphone 4 can be temporarily unlocked using the Gevey Turbo SIM, which interposes between your real SIM and the phone. It is pretty kludgy but it works. There is a short process you go through every time you turn on the phone, after which it can be used on whatever GSM network you have a SIM for. If you shut down your phone, though, it reverts back to being locked to ATT and you have to do the unlocking thingie again. Just so you know that an ATT locked iphone is still usable on other networks. These Gevey cards run anywhere from about $12 to around $27 depending on the version and the greed of the vendor.

I was an iphone user and now use android. The iphone is great if you just want to have it work and not worry about it, but if you like to tinker and customize I recommend android. I am a fan of how open it is, and customizing it to a more "clean" interface is much more ascetically pleasing to me. The only things i really dislike about the iphone is how closed it is as a system and how everything is just all over the desktop.

If you have the means get a iphone4 I highly recommend it.

But will your life feel incomplete with an android phone...NO you still will be able to use it as it is intended to call people and answer calls.
