What's new

I just won my dream brush on eBay! So... to restore or not to restore?

It was before my time too. 10 years before, if my research is correct.

As for why I love this one specifically, I think it's the most attractive handle I've ever seen. I've also always liked pewter, and I'm a big fan of Ralph Lauren as a brand. These days, getting a super high end knot into a handle of your liking is so easy to do that I find it more rewarding to purchase brushes based on elements beyond my control (e.g. aesthetics).

I'm curious to know... why this brush? What's so special about it? I think it was before my time.

It is beautiful, I was watching this one too. Thank god I have to many brushes or I might have sniped it out from under _MementoMori_. Once again I'm happy that if I did not get it, a great B&B member is the new owner! You never see pewter handles on brushes, much less one with a great crest like this.

Congratulations,
I was tried to bidding but the seller had not had international shipping option. I am happy it has gone to another B&B member. I think the knot seems to me fine yet it needs sterilization. On the other hand you can re-plate it which is matte, with silver or gold tone. Joyful shavings.

I have this same brush and in fact, shaved with it today. (see my SOTD) I would definitely not restore the knot until you use it several times. I followed your link and based on the difference of the bloom compared to mine, this brush may be unused or only slightly used. Some may call this brush floppy but I call it luxurious. The feel of the handle is excellent. I use it mainly with the RL Safari soap in the pewter mug. It is a great looking set.

I hope that you enjoy your brush.

Thanks for your two cents on this. You've just made me even more excited to get this thing in the mail! I'll be sure to post back here after I've had a shave with it and tell you guys how it went.

Well, had I won this (knew I wouldn't) I would have put a shavemac D01 Extreme flat top in it....whether it needed it or not. Congrats by the way, It sounds like you appreciate it more than I would have.

Curious, sounds as if this might have been part of a set, anyone able to date this brush...70s?

It was part of a set. I dated it to the late 60s, and it originally came with a matching pewter mug. It was sold with the tallow Ralph Lauren Safari soap that shows up on the BST here every so often.

Beautiful Brush, congrats!

That knot looks just fine, I'd give her a try and see what you think.

There's one of these sets (sans the mug) at the bay right now with a day to go. Brush is in rough but restorable shape. There's only one bid @50.00.

If you search for Ralph Lauren Shaving the set that is currently up for bid should show up, I know we can't post up a current auction on BB.
