What's new

I just started a batch of homemade AS...

I have to say guys, you inspired me to create my own cologne water (though it might work handily as an aftershave)!

I did add about 0.25 oz of British Sterling to that to see if I could get some of that for the base notes and it seems to have worked ok. I'm only 2 days in, though. We'll see if it works but I tried a splash today and I get about an hour of longevity (a nice burst of fresh, juicy clementine and now the hint of British Sterling coming through).

I may have to try Bay Rum next since that seems popular. I can't wait to hear how your results go with the wait (for the ethanol to fade away). I'm only about 2 days in for mine but the 'ginny' smell is mostly mellowed and it doesn't smell like a wino any longer. I think it has actually melded with the other scents and I hardly noticed it when I put it on today. I have high hopes it will be non-boozy in a few weeks.

I googled several homemade AS recipes and they all call for either vinegar (for those who wish to avoid the sting) or for drinking alcohol (ethanol).

2 of the sites I read specifically said to not use Isopropyl Alcohol, though no reason was given.

Anyway, I will post in a few weeks once it gets all filtered and everything.

OOOHH!!! Cloves!! I need to put in cloves!!

as anyone one who has tried the benjamins line of bay rums can tell you , IPalcohol has a chemical odor,it does evaporate after a few minutes , exposing whatever essential oils or synthetic aromatics you have formulated...

As posted before-- the only reason denatured alcohol is used is to prevent winos from drinking the stuff.

any alcohol can be made wino proof by the addition of chemical bitrex, which is in many of your aftershaves and rubbing alcohols

Sorry to steer this slightly off topic, but would it be okay to use denatured alcohol to make one's own aftershave splash? I'm a couple years shy of 21 but I'd really like to try and brew some of my own stuff this Christmas.

I am currently brewing some aftershave as well...I went the best way and got a litre of artisans blend alcohol (sda) from snowdriftfarms.com..it is the perfect solution
