Hype and Panic

Twentythree Skidoo soaps and Oh You Kid shaving brushes.

I'm hoping the current fad for Extreme and Impactful shaving goes out of style soon.

Actually, any overused phrase on B&B gets irksome, but YMMV.

I have also noticed how some products become The Hot Item to acquire. When I started it was the Fatboy that the razor to have, although a 70'a model Schick preceded that.

The Schick was originally given glowing reports by a journalist who used it during a TV demonstration on wet shaving. Because of that the Schick became very sought after and the prices for them went up, especially the adjustable models. They have since come down and leveled off at reasonable prices.

The same thing happened with the Fatboy. It was on another forum that someone well regarded in the shaving community raved about how well the razor worked for him. Others tried them out and many agreed with him that it is a nice razor. Prices for the Fatboy went through roof with some sales at crazy high prices. They too have come down to more reasonable prices.

Ouch has it right in part about shills, and he should having dealt with many of them on this forum. Play up gossip about a favored product about to become unavailable and watch the feeding frenzy begin. Or just rave about it in general. I'll bet that we'll see a reduction in that sort of thing with the new rules in the B/S/T now. Some of the names that were alway listed there with multiple threads have disappeared already, and some of them never posted in the other forums anyway.

The Norton hones is a good example. Also the Crabtree and evelyn (made by Edwin Jagger) small best badger brush.

Al raz.

I did some research a few months before I joined up in 2008 and ended up buying lots of QED soaps and sticks. Not that there was necessarily a lot of hype, but the soaps were in the news enough to make me investigate further. At the time they seemed to have consistently high marks.

I think this is still the case, but I don't seem to read about QED as much as I used to, which to me is a shame. I just did a search and saw that thus far in 2010 there have been around twenty posts devoted exclusively to QED in the soap forum. In contrast, there were over fifty in 2008. Of course, a few of those had to do with the archaic but endearing website that Charles had at the time, for those who remember it.

So I'll give a plug for QED glycerin soaps. Even though I've branched out to other soaps since then, I still use a lot of QED products and enjoy them now as much as I did when I started.

When I joined up, the Merkur HD, Derby blades, Penworks brushes, and Tabac were all being pretty highly hyped.

The Muhle/ Edwin Jagger line so overshadows the Merkur HD that I would find it hard to ever recommend the Merkur to a newbie.

(I got a Merkur 38C in the mail today, and was floored at how different it's finish is compared with my Muhle R89.)

people are still falling over themselves to get their hands on Gillette adjustables because of the hype.

I own a Gillette Super Adjustable (in my opinion the best of the 3 adjustables). Since buying it, I have left it set @ 3. Since I don't really use the adjustment feature, it's basically a Superspeed with a longer handle.:lol:

Those toggles and double rings are due for a leveling out soon:thumbup1:.

Is it not a case of the pot and the kettle when so much of the "Strum and Drang" originates from within this and other forums ? :001_rolle

You know I had completely forgot about QED. It was especially crazy when QED came out with their Wild Rose. I still think I have about 4 tubs of that somewhere.

It seems as though that's the original premise of this thread, but thanks for clarifying.

I've often thought of composing an "on the flavor of the month" sticky to help new members realize that positive mention in the forums over the long haul is a better indicator of an item's quality than positive mention over the most recent month or two. (This one emerged in part from the same thoughts.) That said, I think I join others when I say that I still find some enjoyment in trying a new-ish product that's well-reviewed and presented by a trusted forum member in a non-in-your-face way. Some of the marketing stunts folks have tried to pull here have been shameful. The vendors who have longevity have sought to be members first; vendors second. They've also been responsive to, and appreciative of, member feedback. Some of the best have actively requested this feedback, which makes for a special product indeed.

And when I joined, without a doubt the key players were the C&E BBB and Proraso, which was available at Target at the time. (Of course, back in those days I had to walk 20 miles, uphill, both ways, in six feet of snow, to procure it...)

How long until the modern Williams Mug Soap hype dies down?

Is modern Williams hyped...or loathed?

...What was being hyped when you started?...

Tabac (Bleech!!!), Fatboy, Tabac.

Me starting was a pretty big deal, if I remember correctly.

:lol::lol::lol:I love that story!!!!!!:lol::lol::lol:

Very true. I hope these products are seeing use, but I have found myself guilty of collecting too many high quality products which I enjoy, but do not get to use very often!:thumbdown

I think we all have this problem. I have to remind myself to rotate stock, lest anything goes bad. I probably have a good ten years of lather in inventory.
