Hot dogs anyone?

Old Hippie

Somewhere between 61 and dead
Generally I head into town on Fridays after lunch with Mrs. Hippie. I always intend to pick up a hot dog from Costco, but rarely actually do. By the time I get there it's kind of a toss-up as to whether a hot dog would leave me too full to eat supper, which would be a shame considering that Mrs. Hippie probably has some fantastic cuisine going. The other problem is that by that time in the afternoon the buns have been in the steamer long enough to get gummy. So the experience ain't all it could be.

I do recall living in the US in the days when they still served the Hebrew National dogs. Those I would eat every time, but then again I was large enough to have my own gravitational field in those days, too. [shrug] I'll probably stop by my butcher and pick up a family pack of their dogs, and break them out into two-dog packs. I can make a dog sandwich at home; my favourite with two split dogs on sourdough toast with homemade sauerkraut and -- try this at Costco! -- a beer. :)

Rutt's Hut in Clifton, NJ has the best dogs, the Ripper. Deep Fried Hot Dog. They are so good.

In April 2010, there was a B&B meetup at Rutt's. The dogs were good, but I'm not about to drive 50 miles just for a hot dog. Those B&B meetups were fun, where members could talk wetshaving, sell, trade or PIF shave gear. In 2011, there was a small 4 member meetup in Edison, and a larger one later in the year in Somerville. I guess they just fizzled out over time.

About 12 miles from my house there's a spot called Hot Dog Johnny's that consistently has a line all the way across their parking lot during good weather. I have yet to give it a try. The problem is that about 6 miles beyond Johnny's is a place called Humpty Junior's that has an absolutely DELICIOUS smashburger-style cheeseburger along with outstanding skinny fries and about a million flavors of milkshakes. And if my choice is a good hot dog or a good burger, the burger is going to win out every time. Life can be so hard sometimes.
