Honing a Gold Dolor 200 -Please Help-

...don't care...don't care...don't care...really don't care...

Bayamontate is a good friend of mine. So, from that position of trust and friendship, can I suggest that he has been smoking a little too much marijuana lately?

But, at least he is not being Gold Dollar-style combative!

Let me also say that, even though I do sell these myself, I do not do so in any sort of significant quantities.

I am a proponent of these because I happen to think they are remarkably good shaving razors.

I am a proponent because I think it is great that someone, anyone, can buy one off of EBay for ~$10-15 and have at it in an attempt to learn how to hone, because they don't have to worry about ruining their great grandfather's straight, or some high-zoot razor they just dropped $200 on.

I am a proponent of these because I know that (98%) of these are indeed capable of attaining a very shave worthy edge. These are not junk razors by any means.

Go.... buy one..... grind down the heel, hit up the low grit hones, set a bevel on that sucker, and take it from there. Buy two! In case you happen to hit the one in 50 that actually is junk, the other one almost certainly will be a winner. Most likely you'll end up with two winners.

Find out for yourself!

I may be deluded. I may have my own self interests in mind. So the only way to tell (if it at all matters to you) is to find out for yourself.

One time I PMed a member who had expressed a rather dim view of GDs if he'd be interested in me sending him a free shave ready GD. FREE! Keep it, no strings attached.....He said "no" because if the views of the razor that had been expressed by others.:scared: He had never tried it, and was not interested in trying it for himself.

Sure, some people may not care for the razors, even if they can attain a shave ready edge: perhaps the blade does not feel as "alive" as some razors. Perhaps they prefer the "feel" of a full singing hollow, or a beefier wedge, or whatever. That is a valid opinion. And some may not be able to get is to shave readiness, and thus note the difficulties in doing so. Again, a valid opinion based on their own experiences.

I have three, two GD and one DA (all Seraphim customs) that shave great and have held the edge extremely well. Supposed quality of steel, don't care, cheap scales and wierd shoulders, don't care, crooked tangs, you guessed it, don't care, other people's opinion of them, really don't care, I pay Craig to worry about that. My GDs and DA shave and look great and from where I stand, that's all that really matters.

I just read this to my two kids this very morning!:biggrin1:

Hi guys,

Seraphim's post inspired me to post the pics I took with my microscope. Here they are. To me (a new guy) they look very much the same. there are small chips on both. This is maybe because i'm using quite a cheep C12K from eBay to polish up but I really don't know. All I do really know for definite is that I the GD in the state its in in this pic will not cut hair on my arm unless I press quite hard. I don't fancy doing that on my face. The other blade cuts great.

I will keep trying with the GD might even get another one just in case its a one off thing. I would like to think there are usable cheep blades out there also.

Seraphim's is the expert on these blades, so I will defer to his experience. But, I found that the edge was sort of coming out rough with more pressure. Of course, my amount of pressure may be way different from others:wink2:

I also do not have what must be an elaborate microscope set up to see. I only have a little Radio Shack plastic one to use.

I did shave half my face one day with a W & B and half with the GD. This was before I took the GD on my trip and found, if anything, only a small difference. And, that difference could just be in my head. If honed well, the GD seems to shave well.

I could not agree more that for ~ $11, the GD is definitely a great learning option for honing. I learned not only about my hones, but much more about razor geometry by having to fiddle with them a bit. I could not understand the seeming ban on SRP on even discussing these razors.

Makes one question the whole modus operandi over there, doesn't it?

I just thought its worth pointing out that you don't need an expensive microscope to get this type of pic. I only have one because I work with electronics. The microscope I used was only a £35 X400 usb one from eBay. Works well enough though. I would say it hasn't helped me learn to hone but I thought it was worth mentioning in case anyone was thinking about getting one.

As i mentioned earlier, my gd 108 has given 2 decent shaves so far, so 2 questions, are the 200's a better razor, or is there a better one again? and where do you folks in the states buy yours from, e bay? or a particular vendor?

I don't want to start the debate again either but where the GDs are concerned there is great variation from piece to piece. Some are poor and some are great. Some are straightforard to hone and some a real bear and some near impossible.

For the moment, let's assume the Gold Dollar hones to shave readiness fully as good as vintage razors. The fact that so many report additional honing difficulty compared to vintage razors, and that additional honing time is required, is significant to some I think. To someone who hones a lot of razors, that is significant. To someone who hones a razor or two for themselves, time is not as important.

I certainly do not doubt that there may be a greater percentage of duds in the overall GD population than most other brands/models. I base my statements only on my own experience, which is with only one GD (model 78 I believe?). However, I was so impressed with this one that it's right in there with the rest of my regular rotation of Solingens, Swedes, Spaniards, Americans, and Japanese. And Seraphim was nice enough to slap a set of new scales on there for me. I think he felt bad for turning me on to GD's, which subsequently led to my getting banned from SRP

Again the purpose of my last post was to balance out the opinions in the thread just so that the OP didn't automatically assume he was working with junk and that it should be thrown away. I know first hand what it's like when one person's opinion gets represented as fact, so by no means do I expect anyone to take mine that way. I just enjoy my razor and I'm happy if you guys enjoy yours

Good luck! And have fun!

No marijuana, drug free since birth, cigars and Belgian beer are another story.

The Pierre story is awesome. Only difference would have been had Pierre been myself, despite being eaten by the Lion I would have still said "I don't care."

After shaving with GDs for close to a year I really like them, if others don't, I don't care.
