Hemp versus linen?

Anyone notice any differences in how hemp versus linen strops perform? My general experience in other domains is they can be very similar but I'm not sure about stropping in particular.

I prefer the feel of the flax linen over hemp. Hemp feels rougher to me, but it has seen little use and will likely soften over time I’m guessing?

There's some studies online about Silica particle size & distribution in hemp and Linen vs other plant fibers and why Flax was the fiber of choice for strops.

Can't speak to the science in them, but they are an interesting read if anyone wants to dig them up.

I did a test of secondary strops for their ability to bring back a worn edge. Teats were done with a Filarmonica Sub Cero with 100-135 shaves on it. I testes Kanoyama canvas (either jute or hemp), 2 linens, and cotton. Linen performed the best at bringing the worn edge back. I’m not sure that you’d see a lot of difference between them in an edge with 10-20 shaves on it.

Can you explain how you tested? Laps pressure etc…

Usually the same routine that I use after honing, 20 linen and 50-60 leather. As I approached the edge’s EOL, I increased the linen to 20-40 trying to bring the edge >120 back. My strops are hanging strops, so that kind of determines the pressure. I used what I always do, what feels natural. I wasn’t trying to use extra pressure.
