Help, I'm losing my hair

P

pdillon

Propecia is generally very effective. It is also expensive (my cost was about $80/month) and can have side effects (I think it made me depressed). I took it for several months. Rapid weight gain can also result in hair loss, at least according to my doctor. Also, having longer hair can result in quicker loss because of the greater weight (idem.).

I read once that cutting your hair very short makes baldness less noticeable aesthetically. I think that may be true for male pattern baldness, but I have a receding hairline, and I'm beginning to think a medium length is actually better.

Finally, embrace it.

Do you really, really want to get into a $$$$ "lock" that you're stuck with for the rest of your life, merely to delay the inevitable?

I messed around with Rogaine many years ago. I never felt that it was effective... I might have picked up some "peach fuzz" but that's it.

If I had a terminal illness and $80/month could add 10 years to my life, that's one thing.
My hair being terminal? $80/month?

Sounds like your body is overcompensating for you constantly stripping the natural oils off. Maybe try cutting back for a while to see if your body gets back into equilibrium?
Possibly, but my father is the same way. Just generally very oily dudes. If I go without a shower for over 24 hours my hair looks wet.

Solution in 3 steps:

1-shave your head
2-get a tan
3-hit the gym

Having a pasty scalp is not cool. Put a little definition on and you're good

Yup yup yup.

Comments from bosses upon seeing 2005 and older photos "You looked like an old man"
When asked if it bothered her with me being 7 years younger than SWMBO, her response was "No, because he looks 7 years older!"

That 10 minutes took off 10 years of apparent age.

Don't fight it Luke. Come over to the Dark side. You can't stop your hair loss. Before you shave it off, grow a goatee to offset the hair you will be shaving off your head. You will look younger and soon you will discover hair is a nuisance. I have been shaving my head for 11 years and never looked back. You will also discover that there is a whole other group of women who like a man with a shaved head. If you don't like it you can always grow back what you have left, but give it a month first. Good shaves to you and stop by the "Head Shavers Check in".

I have a different problem...

I'm not losing hair... it's just relocating from my head to my nose and ears.:lol::lol:

Rogaine won't work on a receding hairline. It's only good on the bald spot in back. I'm losing my hair, too. Unless I lose my nerve, I'm losing it all this weekend.

Less hair is a sign of progress. You are evolving, embrace it, you have been chosen to stand above the savages that surround you:thumbup1:

I submit to you:

(Caveat: This post is not intended to be read by anyone who may be offended by the idea of evolution......... Also probably should not be looked at too closely by anyone who knows anything about how evolution really works.)

Sean,

I will pass along to you some sage advice a childhood friend's father (a bald man) gave to me when I was in high school, "I'm bald because this is how I am supposed to look. Could you imagine me with hair? I would look like an *******!". What a way with words. For me, I keep my hair short (high and tight right down to the skin on the sides), I don't live in denial, and when the front meets the back I will officially be a head shaver.

also take to to consideration his age and look because me when I tried shaving my head I just looked very skin head/ white trash''ish. If you can pull it off id say grow some b/a facial hair and bic it. I will be going with the handle bar mustache and a clean bic'ed head when my time comes.

id say for now keep it very very short and ease your way into getting used to having no hair then it wont be such a shock when its all gone because you will be 90% there all ready. Just try to avoid the crown no offense to any body who has one I just hate them personal opinion and also the guy who hold on to the last bit of hair they have and try to spike it or style it nice it just draws more attention to the fact that more scalp is showing then hair.

my buddy is going bald and asked me if it looks bad and to tell him if its time to shave his head and I told him if you are asking then its time.

Say goodbye to it. I bought a pair of clippers in '95 and have not paid for a haircut since...except for when I was in basic training. It's one less thing to worry about in life. Ignore the don't wash your hair advice. Unwashed heads are some of the worst funk EVER...ever smell a hat you've worn for a long time and not washed? Yeah.. that's what it will smell like. If you are super concerned with it, look into the whole "Bosley" deal. Rogaine is iffy and it will MAKE your hair fall out before you see any results. And once you quit using it...you'll lose whatever you regrew and then some. Good luck!

.......submit........ if there was a solution to hair loss, there would not be any bald rich guys.......

I've been bald since my late teens. Now 39. I get my wife to give my a number 0 (no blade) every couple of weeks.

Have never been tempted to shave my head.

Stop using shampoo. The chemicals are very harsh for your hair, and it removes all the oil. When you use shampoo, all you do is remove your natural oils from your head, then you use conditioner to put oils back on. It's a pointless cycle. Your hair needs the natural oils to grow well. So you should either cut down on the amount of shampoo you use (ie, water down the shampoo) or stop using it entirely. If you stop using it entirely, there's a couple weeks to a month where your hair will look like crap, but your hair eventually gets used to not having the oils stripped off, so it in return starts making less oil. Then all you gotta do is rinse your hair under water in the shower for a tad bit longer. If your hair feels particularly oily because it's rainy/hot out or whatever, use some lemon juice in your hair instead. Lemon juice takes the oil off, but unlike soaps which are alkaline, lemon juice is acidic. Acid makes your hair straighter and smoother, basically. The reason why if you use, say, a bar soap on your hair that it comes out bad is because it's alkaline, and alkaline makes your hair's "scales" stand up, but acids make them stay down. Also, without shampoo, your hair because it's oilier, will have more body, thus it thickens the hair.

Nutritionally, try having more fat in the diet. Specifically saturated fat. Your skin ends up getting dry and nasty, and your hair looks bad if there's no fat in the diet. Also, a Chinese herb you can look into is He Shou Wu, it's supposed to help hair grow better, it's basically a testosterone booster.

I am going to have to say that a large portion of this is untrue. First off my diet is very Paleo. I have no problems with cholesterol. I love me some saturated fat and protein in the form of animal. The situation is this: Testosterone converts to DHT which causes your head hair to fall out. I had a 250 Testosterone count (lower than your average female) and a full head of hair. I started using Testim and my hair went the way of the Dodo. It is partly genetic, but the low testosterone was keeping it in check. When weighing the benefits of a proper testosterone level vs. bald i will take option A. I tired Rogaine. It turned my scalp into paste. It was gross. When i stopped using it and threw it all away that paste then hardened into a callous like scale, that i had to peel off. it came off in sheets and was more gross than the paste. Imagine dandruff the size of postage stamps. I tried longerish hair to cover it (kinda combover but back instead of sideways) and that failed. I tried short, and it works BUT i had to keep it at #1 guard or the spot is noticeable. I lopped it all off a 4 days ago. i got the dome tanned this weekend so there is no more white scalp line. My GF will adjust LOL. I look completely different now tho. Rogaine will work for 80% of mShaving ur dome is cheap and iuf you have the right head for it it works. If you have a messed up skull tho, there is this store called Lidz...

As far as the acid vs alkaline, that could be true, some soap is made with lye in the process which is basic, and i imagine over the years soap is still soap. That being said its not gonna make you go bald. If you wanna prove this theory wash your hair with white vingar (diluted) and see what if it all comes back. I wouldn't use lemon juice because if you leave some in and you vissit the sun it could bleach your hair. The fac tof the matter is you are losing your hair. If any of the home remedies or chemical ones worked there "would be no bald rich guy" to quote someone else earlier in the thread. Embrace it because eventually it will catch you.

I gave myself a crew cut before an extended camping trip about five or six years ago, and I have never let it grow long again. In the interim, my receding temples have continued to recede, and it is getting grayer by the minute. But, because it is only a quarter inch long, you can't really see any of that. Plus it takes me about ten minutes per week to take care of my hair. There is no downside unless you are a dedicated pompadour guy.
