Guide to American Button Company Pocket Edition Sets: Part One - Razors

Hmmm

Based on this (going to follow up in that thread) it appears mine might be a Canadian set.

Which would be AWESOME because my wife is Canadian!!

Can anyone help me date this?

Looks like it's a regular Gillette handle based on what this thread shows earlier (not the ABC plain model) and it doesn't have a blade case - which is fine by me.

I mainly bought it (for $10) because I LOVE the patent list on the back of the case, so it will be displayed with that facing forward after polishing it up a bit. I'm also likely to pick up a cheap blade box at some point.

I am also excited to have a Gillette OLD to try out.

But I'm confused by the serial number. It looks it says PC 58633. I see the serial numbers list P and list C but not PC together. It almost looks like the P is different...slightly off level and deeper than the C.
Any thoughts?

To me, it looks like the serial number starts with P and the next digit is a zero, not the letter C or O. I might be wrong.

It's definitely a C in person.

Plus it goes along with the serial standards of the period to best of my knowledge (which is limited to what I've read on B&B

Case lists the patents and the head is also early pocket head. I’d say it’s a Canadian ABC with a replacement, post patent, ball end handle. I guess the original handle was a thin smooth ball end.

It's difficult to know if that razor originally came in that case, because I've seen some of the old ads that have several pictures of ABC cases with razors in them and some have the floral or scroll or other specialty razors and others in the same ad have Old Type razors in ABC cases. The older ABC cases, like the one you have, had a strip of cloth inside with the Gillette logo as you see on some on the previous page, but many, like yours, have lost that little strip of cloth but you can see where it's missing. The more recent cases don't have the little piece of cloth, they just have the Gillette logo printed on the felt top inside the case.

I'm not too worried about it

The razor head is cool to me (especially being Canadian because my wife was born in Canada).

I mainly wanted the case to display the back.

I'm cool with it, especially for $10.

I would argue that the case and head go together. Patent dated cases with 4 rivets date begin in 1910-1911.
The patent date stamp and KCGs signature was also changed to patent numbers and a different signature around 1913-14.

For $10, you did extremely well! Be proud! :)

Here's one for you guys, #B165972, making it the end of 1909 into 1910. Has a Gillette Logo and Stamp, with rounded combs. Also wanted to make note of the plain silver case.

Hi. guys just got these guys from canada. The shell handle dates to late 1914 by the serial number. My question is what are the chances it got one of the new top caps with the bullet studs from the factory. The top cap seems to have the same gold plate and wear pattern to match the rest of the razor. Has anyone seen something like this before? Or did the top cap just get mismatched with the rest of the razor somewhere along the line?

That is a US ABC set and there are examples of ABC razors with pocket cap. The flower case also suggests a factory mismatch, which happened from time to time (pillar handle in any type of case). To me it looks ok.
