Gillette OLD vs. Gillette NEW

After only a single shave withe the OLD Type, I'm going with it. Much better aggressiveness for me than the NEW. Not quite Fatip level, but not too far off.

The biggest difference I understand between the Old and all others, is that the blade lays against the open combs on the Olds. Basically, minimal to no blade gap. But it shaves between the combs. If the Old had a solid bar, it wouldn't work.

Starting with the New Improved, the razor had a blade gap. Please correct me if that's not right.

Variable blade gap actually depending on how much the cap is tightened.

Yep.

The NDC Old took over my daily shaving duties. The first time I used one it was to experiment with an equally vintage Gillette 3 hole blade. Then the next time I used it was months later but this time with a 7OC green, and I've been hooked ever since.

Hello,

If you visualize the cap and guard bar laying at the correct angle to the skin (solid or open, doesn't matter), the degree of exposure the blade has in order to reach the skin is what removes the stubble. This can be confirmed when the razor is held at the correct angle and all stubble in its path, including lather, is smoothly and efficiently removed in a given stroke.

I often use a very shallow angle with these type razors which places bias toward the cap, and away from the open teeth. Just my .02 of course.

You could back off the handle with the old 3-hole blades, which were MUCH stiffer than modern blades. DO NOT do that with modern blades which are almost cut in half down the center, they don't offer enough resistance to keep the handle from turning. And I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think that was ever originally recommended for the ball-end razor, only Double and Single rings with a rigid handle except for the knob.

I believe you are correct on all counts. Shimming a modern blade does seem to reap benefits for me on the Single Ring.

I can confirm. It is not recommended on the ball-ends because the head can loosen with respect to the handle while shaving. The single/double rings had the baseplate fixed to the handle so the head couldn't rotate while shaving.

I was going to say that must be in the minority here because I think the OLD type is anything but aggressive. If I don't shim with 2 cut off blades I cannot get a close shave whatsoever.

The NEW for me is a great razor as is.

:thumbup1: Thank you fine sir!

I'm a big fan of the Old type, especially the Bulldog, but I used my NEW SC with a Fat Handle Tech handle a couple of days ago and was pleasantly surprised. It was only the second time that I've used it, the first time was a couple of months ago and I wasn't impressed. I got a very smooth and efficient shave with it this time, unlike the first. That being said, the OLD is still the best.
