Gillette New Long Comb

Out of all the English Gillettes I have I don’t have a single one in gold. I will admit they did seem to take more pride in their plating and polishing though.

Just noticed the original poster’s baseplate says made in England and the blade bank says USA. Curious if he can make out if the case says made in the USA on the inside like mine and if a switcheroo happened.
Hi,

Yes you are correct the blade bank is USA I also noticed this but the razor is made in England. What do you mean by switcheroo please elaborate.

There was some known instances where the case was shipped overseas (I believe the Bostonian lifting style case) and european razors put in but it’s hard to say for sure. That case may have originally had a made in USA razors originally than it was switched to an England one. As you can tell we’re all into the details. The Federal case is probably one of my favorite New LC case, followed closely by the Regent.

I'm wondering if that is the correct handle for the razor.

In the third pic it looks like the handle is loose and some threads are exposed on the cap stud.

If the handle is tight, it should bottom out on the underside of the base plate. If the ferrule end is too large in diameter, it will not fit into the recess on the bottom of the plate. Does your handle tighten all the way to the plate?...is it loose in the picture?

I'm not sure about this (ball end) handle, but I have a couple of New razors with thick bar handles that have different ferrule diameters, and they are not interchangeable.
I have to agree with gpjoe on this. The handle doesn’t look like it goes with the head. It looks like the ball handle from a pocket edition Old Type.

Very interesting so do you think the razor I have is a total hybrid of different parts? For me it's nice to know I don't really mind I do like to have exact razors. This razor I absolutely love it the detail on the box is amazing stunning art deco style. I even like the very worn look inside. Then the razor and blade box petina is stunning.

It could have been me that I did not tighten up the handle fully. I don't mind if it's not exact for the price I paid. I absolutely love this razor really nice to shave with I think personally I prefer these style razor to the butterfly door styles. I do like my super adjustable 109, slim and slim twist.

No it's a 100% legit 1930ish Federal set sold in the UK.

The handle could be a replacement as the originals are fragile and should have 'patent 133963, other patents pending' stamped on it.

These sets were rushed out to combat Autostrops 7oclock RFB/slot blades (and windex too) and many have the patent info upside down, so it's possible a batch of handles could have no stamp.

They're incredible shavers, one of the best.
Autostrop took over Gillette in 1931 and created the RFB to replace it around 1933.
They're even smoother... You should try your #44 posted on page 1.

Beautiful finds MassRaffa. Cheers.

If you like the Federal, I also vote to keep and use the other plastic-wrapped one. No rush to make up your mind, selling it is always an option later, but it’ll be hard to get another one in that condition once it’s out of your hands.

Wow amazing info really pleased with my new Federal. Also the back story of how it was the gentleman's wife Fathers Razor.

I am torn now with my Gillette New unused. I just want to keep a very small selection of razors. I feel with Gillette New Unused, I would like it to go to someone who can appreciate it. I am trying not to let my possessions attach me. I don't want to have large selection of razors. Due to serious health conditions, I am not sure how long I could be around. If I can sell it on now knowing it will go to a good home. This would be good for me. That's why I looked for an alternative ie The Federal which I am blown away by the razor, the look, the feel of it, the shave is incredible and then the box is so nice.

Thank you all for your amazing help and history lessons so nice.

Yes it's a very hard decision to make but I feel that I have the Federal. I would like the other New to go to a good home someone whom can appreciate it. Very hard to let it go but I think it's best for the razor and me.
