Gillette New Long Comb

Hi,

My latest find is this Gillette New Long Comb. I have one other which is brand new never used still has plastic wrap on handle.

I wanted to get another that I could shave with. Anyways I found this stunning one it's gold colour looking or brass fully with gold colour or brass razor box.

The box is stunning absolutely lovely design on the top inside is a little ropey. But to me this razor is stunning find and a lovely back story. The gentleman's wife's Father he said its over 50 years old.

I have never seen a gold colour or brass coloured Gillette New. It could be as it's old the silver has worn away. But looking at the head it's gold or brass colour intentionally. I am not sure how exact the handle is as there is no patent number on it.

My pictures do not do this razor justice with the colour. The faded colour of the writing inside the box Gillette New is in Gold at the back of the box when opened.

I absolutely love the razor just lightly cleaned it to use. I am not usually a gold person but this razor stood out for me

Any info or feedback on this razor fully welcomed please. Would be interested to know if the gold or brass was intentional.

It’s a New Federal set, circa ~1930 so it could be closer to 100 years old. They were originally a gold wash but sadly that tends to wear easily. They look great in newer condition but hard to find like that. I’m a fan of the art deco box style of that era. View attachment 2014096View attachment 2014095
Wow yours are stunning really nice collection you have there.
Thank you for the info wow sounds amazing Gillette New Federal cannot believe the age as well. Really pleased I managed to find this. I don't mind mine is not in anyway condition yours are in. I really like the patina and the way its been used. I feel blessed to own it and have my first shave tomorrow. Thank you so much for the information.

English LC News are heavily plated (2x gold + nickel underneath maybe?)
They're all fantastic
Out of all the English Gillettes I have I don’t have a single one in gold. I will admit they did seem to take more pride in their plating and polishing though.

Just noticed the original poster’s baseplate says made in England and the blade bank says USA. Curious if he can make out if the case says made in the USA on the inside like mine and if a switcheroo happened.

I'm wondering if that is the correct handle for the razor.

In the third pic it looks like the handle is loose and some threads are exposed on the cap stud.

If the handle is tight, it should bottom out on the underside of the base plate. If the ferrule end is too large in diameter, it will not fit into the recess on the bottom of the plate. Does your handle tighten all the way to the plate?...is it loose in the picture?

I'm not sure about this (ball end) handle, but I have a couple of New razors with thick bar handles that have different ferrule diameters, and they are not interchangeable.

Good spot, I can't see patent info on the handle too.
It could be a replacement as these early ball end handles crack/split easily.
Maybe a late 30s #44 set donor handle?

Those lovely cases (Fed, Oxford etc) and blade banks were all imported from the US.

The LC New started out as a mid/high end razor.
I wonder if early US LC News with pat pending were also well plated?

I looked for the patent info too, but the pics aren't clear enough.

Lacking patent info, and looking at the even color of the brass, I suspected immediately that that handle was a newer replacement. I have a brass dupe from Razor Emporium the looks very much like the handle on this razor.

Hard to say without more info from the OP, but if that handle is snug in that picture and the threads are still showing, my contention is that it's the wrong handle for that razor.
